You want to turn off the light in your bedroom, but you are so comfy and cozy under your blanket. Your plants are always dying because you have no idea how much water to give them. You’d like to watch “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” but your stupid boyfriend wants to watch “Real Housewives of Miami,” instead.
Modern life is full of problems. Luckily, technology companies have devoted brilliant men and women to solving those problems and making these troubles nothing but quaint trifles of ancient life.

Internet activists on Friday celebrated Internet Freedom Day, marking the one year anniversary of widespread online protests against controversial antipiracy legislation.
Last January, Congress was considering two bills, the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, and Protect IP Act, or PIPA, meant to crackdown on copyright violation, which content creators say costs them billions in lost revenue each year.
But members of the tech industry countered that the proposed bills would stifle innovation, undermine the very architecture of the web, and limit free speech online.

Two Belgian brothers who were born deaf and were slowly going blind chose to end their lives the way they began them: together. The dual deaths of the identical twins last month marked the first reported double euthanasia of twins worldwide.
Marc and Eddy Verbessem, 45, were inseparable during their lives, the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws reports. Suffering from an incurable illness, the pair shared a room in their parental home before studying shoe repair and moving in together in a small apartment.

Which is our universe’s oldest star? Astronomers now say the honor may go to HD 140283, a gassy giant that’s celebrated an estimated 13.2 billion birthdays, give or take a couple hundred million, according to the January 2013 issue of Nature.
“We believe this star is the oldest known in the Universe with a well determined age,” Howard Bond, an astronomer at Pennsylvania State University, told Nature. The finding was announced January 10, at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Long Beach, Calif.

Children are not the only ones who can learn from Big Bird and brain scans of children and adults watching “Sesame Street” reveal how brains change as they learn reading and math, researchers say.
One goal of brain imaging is discovering more about how children learn. Such an understanding of the building blocks of learning might help diagnose and treat learning difficulties.
For instance, “when children fail to learn mathematics well, there could be a number of different reasons for that and it could be that they have weak concepts of numbers, that they have poor memory, that they have limited attention,” researcher Jessica Cantlon, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Rochester in New York, told LiveScience. Brain tests could help determine the precise cause of a kid’s math impairments, “because different patterns of brain activity likely accompany each of those different cognitive impairments.”

The computer-composer, created by a research team led by Francisco Vico at Spain’s University of Malaga, has released an album, composed symphonies performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and “written” over 1 billion songs in every genre imaginable. Thanks to the residents of a Texas city and a Facebook campaign that has gone viral, an abused dog who was was left for dead in a garbage bag has been given a new chance at life.
The pooch, who has since been named “Buck,” was reportedly found on Jan. 5, after a local resident of Conroe, Tex., noticed that a garbage bag left on the side of the road and “tied to a t-post of a fence” was moving. He tore the bag open and was shocked to find the 3-year-old mixed breed, covered in blood and weakened by the cold, inside.
