A 26-year-old Chinese immigrant who was convicted of being an enforcer for a Taiwan-based gang was sentenced Tuesday to spend the rest of his life in a Nevada prison for killing one person and wounding two others in a bloody knife attack in a Las Vegas karaoke bar almost four years ago.
Xiao Ye Bai’s tears fell on his written apology as he told a Clark County District Court judge through a Mandarin interpreter that he knew his sorrow couldn’t atone for his crimes including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy and extortion.

An unnamed 16-year-old student from Cypress Lake High School in Fort Myers, Fla., was suspended for three days after he disarmed a 15-year-old peer who allegedly threatened to shoot another student with a loaded revolver during a Feb. 26 fight on a school bus, according WFTX.

Looking for an interesting way to educate your children on the value of art history? Perhaps this photography project, imagined by Australian artist Bill Gekas and his adorable 5-year-old daughter, can help.
Drawing inspiration from classical paintings from Rembrandt, Raphael and Velazquez, Gekas and his daughter worked together to pay tribute to well-known portraits. With the snap of a shutter, the pint-sized model, who dons all the traditional garb in her father’s photographs, transforms into familiar figures like Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” (above). In a previous interview with JPG Magazine, Gekas says, “I like blurring the line between fine art and portraiture, creating something deeper.”

Multiple sclerosis affects more than 2.1 million individuals worldwide. But there is another disease that affects the central nervous system and is far more common.
Central Pain Syndrome is a neurological condition that causes chronic pain in those who suffer from it. Unfortunately, it’s a condition that often goes diagnosed. In recognition of Rare Diseases Day on Thursday, HuffPost Live featured the stories of several individuals whose lives have been impacted by CPS.

Did you know that only one in ten of the cells in your body is actually human? That’s right. A whopping 90 percent of your cells are bacterial, viral, or parasitic in nature.
The NIH’s Human Microbiome Project is ambitiously aiming to characterize the microbial communities living in us. And while the vast majority of these germs are symbionts, once in a while, we pick up a straggling critter that’s not just along for the ride–it’s there to leach our nutrients at all costs.
These parasites fall in five distinct categories, the first of which is the most numerically abundant animal on Earth: nematodes.

Brain cells can live at least twice as long as the organisms in which they reside, according to new research.
The study, published today (Feb. 25) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that mouse neurons, or brain cells, implanted into rats can survive with the rats into old age, twice as long as the life span of the original mice.
The findings are good news for life extension enthusiasts.
“We are slowly but continuously prolonging the life of humans,” said study co-author Dr. Lorenzo Magrassi, a neurosurgeon at the University of Pavia in Italy.

“Directed evolution” may save our polluted planet. At least, chemical engineer Dr. Frances Arnold sees it that way.
The recent National Medal of Technology and Innovation recipient is credited with pioneering the technique of directed evolution, a method used to engineer proteins or evolve certain organisms, leading to the revolutionary production of renewable fuels and chemicals, among other results.

Carmen Blandin Tarleton is starting over.
The Vermont former transplant nurse has undergone more than 50 surgeries — including a full face transplant — since her jealous ex-husband poured lye on her in 2007, burning and disfiguring more than 80 percent of her body.
She’s currently recovering from a transplant that applied an anonymous female donor’s facial skin to the 44-year-old’s nose and lips, facial muscles, neck, arteries and nerves. Doctors tell the Associated Press that Tarleton is “a fighter” and quoted her as saying she feels “strong, and . . . confident that I have the strength to deal with whatever comes my way.”

Prosecutors on Thursday charged a Minnesota man with murdering his missing wife, after investigators found blood traces throughout the couple’s home and evidence of an extensive effort to cover it up.
Authorities said they have not found 30-year-old Kira Trevino’s body, but they believe she’s dead because of the amount of blood found in her car and in the couple’s St. Paul home and because it wasn’t like her to disappear without telling anyone.
Jeffery Dale Trevino, 39, was arrested Tuesday and made an initial court appearance Thursday. He is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in his wife’s death, which investigators believe happened last Thursday or Friday. Bail was set at $1 million.

A man accused in the fatal shooting of an aspiring rapper killed as he drove his Maserati on the Las Vegas Strip last week has been arrested in the Los Angeles area, Las Vegas print and television media reported on Thursday.
Kenneth Wayne Cherry, 27, was fatally wounded in the shooting, and his silver Maserati veered into a taxicab, killing the driver and his passenger when it exploded into flames.
Spokesmen for the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff said they had no immediate information on an arrest in the high-profile case. A Las Vegas police spokeswoman could not immediately confirm the arrest.
