For thousands of years, the Bramble Cay melomys, a small, mouse-like rodent, eked out a living on a tiny coral island in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. It was the reef’s only endemic mammal species, and survived on the few plants that grew on its island home.
But as climate change expedited sea level rise and increased storm surges that flooded the low-lying island, the Bramble Cay melomys and its food supply was severely threatened. In June, after years of fruitless searching, scientists announced that they could no longer find any trace of the rodent.
The melomys was posthumously bestowed the ignominious title of the first mammal to go extinct because of human-induced global warming. “Sadly,” WWF-Australia spokesperson Darren Grover told The New York Times, “it won’t be the last.”
Scientists say the planet is currently on the precipice of the sixth mass extinction, an event that could see the wiping out of at least 75 percent of the Earth’s species. The current extinction rate is at least 100 times higher than normal, according to a 2015 study. Humans have triggered an extinction episode “unparalleled for 65 million years,” the researchers said.

The first debate of the 2016 Democratic presidential primary will be defined by two moments: When the topic turned to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) chief vulnerability, Hillary Clinton jumped at the opportunity to draw a sharp contrast. When the roles were reversed, Sanders threw her a lifeline.
Those two exchanges — the first on gun control and the second on Clinton’s use of a private email account as secretary of state — exemplified not just the different political DNA of each candidate, it underscored the brewing intensity of a Democratic primary that few thought would be competitive.
Clinton’s overall performance will be remembered as the more forceful one, in part because the early questions played to her strengths. A back-and-forth on why Sanders didn’t consider himself a capitalist led to her defending robust regulations, with him touting Denmark.

- Question: Mrs. Pledger, I think you told our jurors that during the time that you’re taking Mr. Pledger to doctors while he was on Risperdal, none of his doctors ever diagnosed gynecomastia?
- Benita Pledger: I never heard of gynecomastia. And, no, they did not.
- Question: At some point … you saw a commercial on TV for a Plaintiff’s law firm about Risperdal and lawsuits running?
… And it had a phone number 1-800, call if you have taken Risperdal?
- Pledger: It had a number.
- Question: And they would file lawsuits?
- Pledger: That’s what the commercial was about, yes.
- Question: And, Mrs. Pledger, it’s true that the first person to tell you that Risperdal caused your son’s gynecomastia wasn’t a doctor, it was a plaintiff’s law firm?
- Pledger: True.

This dog with a dark past is now looking toward a bright future.
Earlier this month, Second Chance Rescue in New York City received a plea for help from a shelter in Georgia regarding a pit-bull mix, who has since been named Landis. The canine was emaciated with several serious medical problems.
“The tendons in all 4 legs are ruptured due to his prior living conditions. He is very small and underweight,” Jacquelyn O’Sullivan of Second Chance Rescue told the Huffington Post in an e-mail. “His body condition tell us that he lived in a small space, hence his dwarf-like appearance, bent legs and curved spine.

It all started with a little crab.
While conducting tests with a conventional submersible that crawled on the bottom of the sea, ocean engineer Graham Hawkes came nose to nose with a little crustacean that was poised to fight the underwater machine.
“I remember stopping and laughing,” Hawkes told The Huffington Post. “But I thought, ‘That crab has got it all wrong. These fish are moving in three dimensions. This guy is scurrying along the bottom. So am I. We’ve both got it wrong.'”
Inspired by the movement of fish, Hawkes designed and built the DeepFlight Super Falcon, a submarine that flies through the water like an airplane, instead of taking on water to sink itself. Similar to how hot-air balloons release weights to fly up, traditional submarines have compartments that fill with water to sink down.
Hawkes started a company out of his garage to create the DeepFlight Super Falcon in 1995. Today, Hawkes’ dream has become a reality. “What we’re doing is really, really obvious,” Hawkes said. “There’s nothing that clever about it. We actually build a thing that has wings, we build up speed, and it just flies underwater.”

After learning that a summer intern within its investment banking unit had been found dead at his London student housing complex last week, Bank of America offered the other interns in his program the opportunity to call it quits.
They all had just one week left on their contract, but, according to London’s Financial Times, no one went home.
Such devotion is part of a hard-charging, competitive culture that some blamed for the death of 21-year-old intern, Moritz Erhardt. Since he was found dead by flatmates in his London apartment, talk spiraled online suggesting long hours were at least partly to blame. On Friday, John McIvor, the London spokesman for Bank of America, told The Huffington Post the bank will convene a formal working group to look into Erhardt’s death, as well as to consider how to improve the work-life balance of the institution’s junior staffers.

President Barack Obama will ask the State Department not to approve the construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline unless it can first determine that it will not lead to a net increase in greenhouse gas emissions, a senior administration official told The Huffington Post. “Allowing the Keystone pipeline to be built requires a finding that doing so would be in our nation’s interest,” the president said in a Tuesday speech on climate change. “And our national interest will be served only if this project does not significantly exacerbate the problem of carbon pollution. The net effects of the pipeline’s impact on our climate will be absolutely critical to determining whether this project is allowed to go forward.”

Two things humans often do: We anthropomorphise, and we dehumanise. Which is, if you think about it, a rather curious dichotomy: when we anthropomorphise, we ascribe human characteristics to inhuman beings, and when we dehumanise, we do the opposite, denying the full and equal humanity of other members of our own species. The classic example of this is someone who invests deeply in animal welfare, but doesn’t care about human rights abuses. Obviously, it’s possible to feel passionate about both, and there’s also the issue of compassion fatigue: There’s only so much we can care about before we reach a sort of emotional event horizon and start to shut down.
