Carbon monoxide poisoning is likely to blame for the recent death of an 11-year-old boy in a motel room and the deaths of a couple found inside the same motel room nearly two months ago, police said.
Emergency responders found carbon monoxide in the room where Jeffrey Williams of Rock Hill, S.C., died Saturday, Boone police said in a news release Monday. Investigators said a preliminary autopsy found the boy died of asphyxia, which happens when toxic gases cut off oxygen to the body. State medical examiners will conduct toxicology tests on samples taken from the boy’s body.
Jeffrey’s 49-year-old mother, Jeannie Williams, was rushed to a hospital and survived.

A Minnesota high school cheerleader has been arrested after police say she prostituted a teammate who has a developmental cognitive delay.
Montia Marie Parker, an 18-year-old senior at Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, was said to be popular among her classmates. Her future, however, is now on hold, pending the outcome of charges that were recently levied against her for sex trafficking and promoting prostitution.
“This particular situation is highly unusual for us. We’ve never had a situation like this before,” Chief Mark Raquet, of the Minnetonka Police Department, told The Huffington Post.
According to a copy of the criminal complaint provided to HuffPost by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, the investigation into Parker began on March 9, when the parent of a 16-year-old girl contacted local police and told them she found disturbing text messages on her daughter’s phone.

“Sharing is caring,” goes the old saying. But you may want to get a second opinion when the “caring” is done by a hospital, and the “sharing” is that same hospital scheming to siphon off part of your $300 million estate.
That’s the charge made in recently filed court documents involving Huguette Clark, a reclusive, extremely wealthy heiress who died in May 2011 at the age of 104 after having spent the last two decades of her life at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan. Over the course of those 20 years, officials at the nonprofit hospital may have engaged in what The New York Times has termed “an all-out fundraising campaign” to extract donations from Clark.
Clark was originally admitted to the hospital in 1991 at the age of 85, after she was found emaciated and in poor health in her Fifth Avenue apartment. After receiving treatment for a skin cancer that had disfigured her face, reports the New York Post, she continued to stay in various rooms in the hospital, even though, court documents state, there was likely “no medical basis for keeping her.”

A US federal judge has allowed a severely-ill 10-year-old girl a prime spot on the list to receive an adult lung transplant, despite her young age.
Sarah Murnaghan has been in hospital for three months with end-stage cystic fibrosis, but children under 12 are given last priority for adult lungs.
The Obama administration had declined to intervene. Analysts warn the judge’s decision sets a dangerous precedent.
The judge’s order does not guarantee a lung for Sarah.
“We are beyond thrilled,” Janet Murnaghan, the girl’s mother, told the Associated Press. “Obviously we still need a match.”
Some medical analysts say the judge’s intervention creates a dangerous precedent for others on organ transplant lists.

Angelina Jolie was glowing on the red carpet today (June 2) as she made her first public appearance since revealing her decision to undergo a double mastectomy last month.
Dressed in a custom black Saint Laurent gown, the actress, 37, joined her fiance Brad Pitt, 49, at the premiere of his new film “World War Z” at the Empire Leicester Square in London. The couple was all smiles as they posed for photos, looking as captivated with each other as ever.
On May 14, Jolie announced that she had been diagnosed with a mutated BRCA1 gene predisposing her to cancer. She revealed she had undergone a preventive mastectomy on Feb. 16 and reconstructive surgery on April 27 in an op-ed in the New York Times.
“I do not feel any less of a woman,” she wrote. “I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.”

Mark E. Robson, M.D.
I must confess that I am very conflicted about adding to the river of words that have been written about Angelina Jolie’s decision to undergo a risk-reducing (preventive) mastectomy. She made a difficult choice, and has discussed that choice with power and grace, in the hope of helping other women. Both the choice and the disclosure took a lot of courage. Full stop. But the power of her celebrity, and the extensive media coverage of her decision, may wind up making things more difficult for some women with BRCA1 or 2 mutations.
I have been involved in research in this area for 17 years, since shortly after BRCA1 and BRCA2 were discovered, and I honestly have no idea what I would do if I were a woman faced with this decision. Imagine the situation. You go to talk to a health care provider because you have a family history of breast cancer or ovarian cancer. Hopefully, you have genetic counseling (which not everyone gets, although they should), and learn about genetics for an hour or so. If it looks like there’s a meaningful chance that genetic testing could be informative, you then give a blood sample or spit in a tube.

Angelina Jolie is an American actress, film director, and screenwriter. She has received an Academy Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards, and was named Hollywood’s highest-paid actress by Forbes in 2009 and 2011.

We know that a nightcap — or three — won’t help us drift off into a peaceful slumber. But we didn’t know exactly why it sets us up for a restless, sweaty, snore-y, anxious night.
By Valerie Ross
Thanks to an April 2013 review of 20 studies — and to the more than 500 people who drank in the name of science and then turned in for the night in a sleep lab so that researchers could record their brainwaves — it’s been confirmed: If you only have a bit to drink, alcohol can help you sleep better during the first part of the night, spurring an increase in slow-wave sleep, which the body needs in order to repair tissues and strengthen the immune system, and leaving dream-studded REM sleep untouched. Too much booze, however, can interrupt REM sleep, which is vital for memory and concentration. As the alcohol wears off during the second part of the night, sleep is often disrupted, the review found, as people frequently wake up. (In some cases, they’ll also start sweating, feel anxious or — if they do manage to get some REM sleep — have nightmares.) But that’s only the beginning of how alcohol gets between you and a decent night’s rest.
