The conundrum has stumped doctors for years. Why do neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s affect only the elderly? Why do some people live to be over 100 with normal brain functioning while others develop dementia decades earlier?
Now, a new study by Harvard scientists points to a possible answer, one that could spark further research that — ultimately — could lead to new drugs and treatments for dementia.
Researchers have found that a protein active during fetal brain development, called REST, switches back on later in life to protect aging neurons from various stresses, including the toxic effects of abnormal proteins. But in those with Alzheimer’s and mild cognitive impairment, the protein — RE1-Silencing Transcription factor — is absent from key brain regions.

There are lots of tricks out there designed to make people look and feel younger. For example, one study showed that just the scent of grapefruit can actually prompt the male brain to believe that a woman is about five years younger than she actually is.
But there also are some supposedly real ways to impact how long you will live. By eating well and making smart choices, you can help slow the aging process. Typically, fruits and vegetables — packed with antioxidants — can help get rid of the free radicals from your skin that cause you to age prematurely. And, generally speaking, eating well-balanced meals and exercising regularly can help you stay fit and live longer.

Keep your brain healthy with these foods that can slow down—or perhaps even help prevent—the disease.
Keep Your Brain Healthy
The best thing you can do to keep your brain working the way you want it to: exercise, and eat right. “Nutrition is very, very important to brain health,” says Paul Nussbaum, Ph.D., a clinical neuropsychologist and member of scientific advisory board for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. “Surprisingly, the brain is made up of 60% fat—it’s the fattest part of our body—and that fat insulates the nerve tracks. Without that fat we slow down mentally,” Dr. Nussbaum says.

Seattle-based author and editor Jane Catherine Lotter had many accomplishments in her life — notably, a weekly humor column called “Jane Explains” and a recently published comic novel, The Bette Davis Club — but at the end of her life, she didn’t define success in terms of her career achievements.
Lotter died of endometrial cancer on July 18 at the age of 60, survived by her husband, 19-year-old son and 23-year-old daughter. One of the “few advantages” of dying of cancer, Lotter wrote with characteristic humor and wit in the Seattle Times, “is that you have time to write your own obituary.” Lotter’s touching tribute to her own life went viral on Twitter shortly after it was published.

Among the bulging pecs and rippling thighs on display at the 2013 Oregon Ironman Competition, Felton Campbell and Mike Huard’s stood out. At 61 and 62 respectively, the two were the oldest competitors there, going toe to toe with 242 men more than half their age.
Though Campbell took first place over his friend in the competition’s Masters Men Over 60 category, the two aren’t just competing within their age group. “Right now, me and Mike’s goal is to beat someone in their 40s,” Campbell said. “You’re never too old.”
“Here’s where [age] works to our advantage — it’s because we’re mature, we’ve been through all the testosterone spurts, we’re having fun and it’s keeping us really healthy,” Huard added.
The pair join a fit group of other post-50 bodybuilders making jaws drop: world’s oldest female bodybuilder, Ernestine Shepherd, and vegan bodybuilder Jim Morris.

Fifty is as good a time as any to take stock of what you’ve done and accomplished in your life, and figure out what more you’d like to do with your time now that you’re both older and (maybe a little) wiser. Hence the bucket list, a list of things one would like to do before they die.
If you’re looking to add some items to your bucket list, you are in luck! We’ve created a list of things we think people should do at least once in their lives.
