If scientists are correct, jellyfish may hold the key to immortality.
That’s the premise of a New York Times Magazine article that examines a species of jellyfish (appropriately) nicknamed the “immortal jellyfish.”
Known officially as Turritopsis nutricula (and sometimes as Turritopsis dohrnii), the minute creature has the ability to transform its cells back into a youthful state. As National Geographic puts it, the jellyfish transforms “into a blob-like cyst” that grows into a polyp colony — the first stage of life.

NASA is well-known for the awesome space photos snapped by its spacecraft and astronauts—in fact, the administration has an entire website devoted just to space imagery. But it’s not the only space agency known for spectacular photos of the cosmos.
The European Space Agency (ESA), an organization comprised of 20 member states, has collected more than its share of eye-popping multimedia. From the Cassini-Huygens probe’s austere photos of Saturn and its moons to Envisat’s visions of our own planet, images from ESA spacecraft span the whole wondrous range of space science.

Watch game developer Kevin Slavin’s TEDTalk above and then explore his thoughts in this companion essay.
Back at TEDGlobal, the most difficult aspect of preparation was the editing process, chipping away at three hours of material to cut it down into 14 live minutes.
Of all the darlings that were killed, the ones I missed most were a few minutes about genetic algorithms. Like everything I presented, it’s a subject for which I have interest and passion, not training or expertise. It’s going to seem very dull. But stay with me for a few of the missing minutes.

Much has been made of the so-called 2012 Mayan apocalypse. But for the real Maya people, the end of the world came slowly and timed with historic droughts.
A new, ultra-detailed climate record from a cave in Belize reveals Classic Maya civilization collapsed over centuries as rain dried up, disrupting agriculture and causing instability that led to wars and the crumbling of large cities. A final major drought after the political collapse of the Maya may be what kept the civilization from bouncing back.

SAN FRANCISCO — Ötzi the Iceman, an astonishingly well-preserved Neolithic mummy found in the Italian Alps in 1991, was a native of Italian Alps, not a first-generation émigré from Sardinia, new research shows. And genetically, he looked a lot like other Stone Age farmers throughout Europe.
The new findings, reported Thursday (Nov. 8) here at the American Society of Human Genetics conference, support the theory that farmers, and not just the technology of farming, spread during prehistoric times from the Middle East all the way to Finland.

There are some 120 species of duck, representing a wide variety of shapes, sizes and behaviors. Some are noisy and gregarious, others shy and elusive. They are familiar animals we think we know. But most of us don’t really know these phenomenal, sophisticated creatures at all. This program follows a wood duck family as a male and female create a bond, migrate together across thousands of miles, nurture and protect a brood of chicks, then come full circle as they head to their wintering grounds.

This video is really fantastic, it show the good side of our human species. They worked so hard with one little knife to free the whale, it is somewhat frightening when you consider that the whale was larger than the boat. But the whale knew they were trying to help it and didn’t panic, in which case they might have all died.

Researchers have succeeded in taking a stunning image of a newly synthesised molecule called olympicene.
The molecule – just over a billionth of a metre across – gets its name because its five linked rings resemble the Olympic symbol.
It was first made by collaborators at the University of Warwick in the UK.

The technique showcases details well under a billionth of a metre in size
