Among the bulging pecs and rippling thighs on display at the 2013 Oregon Ironman Competition, Felton Campbell and Mike Huard’s stood out. At 61 and 62 respectively, the two were the oldest competitors there, going toe to toe with 242 men more than half their age.
Though Campbell took first place over his friend in the competition’s Masters Men Over 60 category, the two aren’t just competing within their age group. “Right now, me and Mike’s goal is to beat someone in their 40s,” Campbell said. “You’re never too old.”
“Here’s where [age] works to our advantage — it’s because we’re mature, we’ve been through all the testosterone spurts, we’re having fun and it’s keeping us really healthy,” Huard added.
The pair join a fit group of other post-50 bodybuilders making jaws drop: world’s oldest female bodybuilder, Ernestine Shepherd, and vegan bodybuilder Jim Morris.

Judy Smith of New York City works out at Uplift Fitness, a women’s-only gym where the classes focus on strength training just as much as calorie-blasting cardio, to boost her bone density while she tones her body. “The cardio is important, obviously, but strength is just as important,” she says. “All these studies say it’s important for bone density, it’s important when you age to make sure you have muscle mass, and you’re maintaining that muscle mass.” And when you add high-intensity cardio bursts to your strength-training plan, Uplift co-founder Helena Wolin reminds her clients, you really send your calorie burn through the roof.

High-intensity interval workouts have long been praised for their weight-loss benefit, but when it comes to overall health, simply moving for longer periods of time every day might be best, researchers from Masstricht University say. Their findings are published in the journal PLOS ONE.
When normal-weight participants burned a similar amount of calories through either short, intense workouts or longer periods of standing and walking, the group that stood and walked more had improved cholesterol levels and insulin response compared to the vigorous exercisers. This effect wasn’t easy to come by, however: The group that completed longer periods of low-intensity exercise substituted six hours of sitting with four hours of walking and two hours of standing every day.
