Historically, Apple hasn’t been one to offer sneak peeks of anything. That changed today with the next-generation Mac Pro — likely a function of the fact that teasing such a machine couldn’t possibly weaken sales of a desktop that hasn’t been updated in a technological eternity. Waiting just outside of the concourse walls was one of the prototype cylinders, and it’s perhaps the sexiest workstation this world has ever seen. All we know for now is that it’ll make its debut “later this year,” boasting four USB sockets, six Thunderbolt 2 ports, a full-size HDMI connector, a 3.5mm headphone port and a pair of gigabit Ethernet ports. And yes, it’s almost certainly a fingerprint magnet.

At an earlier press event in Shenzhen, Imagination Technologies’ CEO Sir Hossein Yassaie delivered a clear message: his company’s $100 million acquisition of MIPS isn’t a short term strategy. Additionally, he has ambitious plans with the latter’s chip architecture — a well-known rival of ARM and Intel’s x86.
In his presentation, Yassaie boasted that there are currently over 300 SoCs based on MIPS. And out of the five billion devices shipped with Imagination Tech’s IP to date, three billion of them use MIPS. These include phones, tablets (especially in China), wearables, printers, networking devices, storage devices and more.
For a company who already owns IP in the graphic (including ray-tracing), video (low-power transcoding) and radio processing space, it’s no surprise for Imagination Tech to acquire MIPS to complete its portfolio. The result is the upcoming Warrior CPU that promises “best-in-class performance and efficiency” in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors, but we’ve been told that these won’t hit the market until next year. Nevertheless, Yassaie believes that MIPS has strong technical advantages in terms of silicon area, power and capabilities such as multithreading. And apparently he has people to back him up on this.

Computer printers aren’t typically linked with the word “subversive,” but that’s the mission of a new site for 3D printer files.
Defcad was announced Tuesday at the South by Southwest Interactive conference. It is designed to give 3D printer enthusiasts access to files that allow them to create objects with their printers — even if those objects are protected by intellectual property laws.
Defcad is backed by Defense Distributed, an Austin, Texas group that recently made headlines by offering 3D printer files to make firearm parts.

Have you ever wondered whether all this–you, your life, the universe–is just a sophisticated computer simulation?
Martin Savage, a physicist at the University of Washington, thinks we can’t discount the idea. In fact, he and two colleagues (Silas Beane and Zohreh Davoudi) published a paper in November 2012 exploring the possibility. I spoke to him about why he thinks we may be the byproduct of some sophisticated computer code.
As we spoke, I noticed he used the word they a lot, when referencing the proposed simulators. I couldn’t help but ask, “who is they?” His answer will blow your mind.

John McAfee, the anti-virus software pioneer, who arrived in Miami on Wednesday after a month-long international run from Belize authorities, said he is willing to talk to police but will not return to the country.
In an interview on Friday morning, McAfee told CNBC reporter Robert Frank that he had “nothing to do with the murder of Gregory Faull,” but that he was open to talking to Belize police.

An international team of scientists has generated the first laser-like beams of X-rays from a tabletop device.
Most of today’s X-ray lasers require so much power they rely on facilities the size of sports stadiums.
This has prompted efforts to build a cost-effective and reasonably sized X-ray laser.
