Invariably, someone brings up the anatomically-shaped balloons.
About a year ago, a bachelorette party from Texas rented a house through Airbnb on Ursulines Avenue in Treme, a residential neighborhood close to the bars and restaurants of the French Quarter.
The women tied inflatables shaped like penises to the front of the house, perhaps not realizing that the neighbors ― families and other longtime residents ― might mind.
“My oldest son woke up and there was an inflatable dildo taped to the house next door and I was like, ‘We’re out of here,’” said Christian Rhodes, a 36-year-old lawyer whose clients include the Greater New Orleans Hotel & Lodging Association and Uber.
He sold his house last year. “I’m not explaining to a 6-year-old what an inflatable dildo is.”

It is the question that pits neighbor against neighbor, tribe against tribe, and Republican against Republican.
.
Should America risk the last great salmon run on Earth to dig what could be the richest mine on the planet?
.
Should Alaska gamble the red gold that swims into their nets and feeds tens of millions to chase the yellow gold and copper craved by world markets?
.
At the center of this question is the proposed Pebble Mine, a massive mineral deposit worth between $300 billion and $500 billion being pursued by the Canadian mining company Northern Dynasty and intended to be built in southwestern Alaska.
.
It all began in the 1980s, when a helicopter survey team noticed a strange red spot on a windswept stretch of land north of the state’s Bristol Bay.
.
As salmon make their journeys to spawn, they provide nutrients that sustain a variety of Alaskan wildlife, including brown bears.

By the end of this week, parts of the Northeast will be colder than Mars.
At Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire, the temperature will plunge to minus 35 degrees Friday night into Saturday, weather observer Taylor Regan said. At last check several days ago, the high temperature on Mars was minus 2 degrees Fahrenheit.
.
But it’s not just New England suffering winter’s wrath. Freezing rain, sleet and snow are smothering parts of the Southeast on Wednesday.

Authorities identified the gunman — who was killed in Sunday’s shooting — as 37-year-old Matthew Riehl.
.
Riehl barricaded himself in a bedroom in his apartment in a Denver suburb before suddenly opening fire with a rifle and shooting four deputies who were in the apartment responding to a complaint.
One of the deputies died. Five law enforcement officers and two civilians were injured in shooting exchanges before the suspect was killed by a police tactical team, authorities said.
.
Riehl served with the Wyoming National Guard from 2006-2012, according to Deidre Forster with the Wyoming National Guard’s office of public affairs.

Officers responded to a 911 call about shots fired at the home about 15 minutes before midnight on Sunday, according to a news release from Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
.
The bodies of 42-year-old Linda Kologi, 44-year-old Steven Kologi, 18-year-old Brittany Kologi and Mary Schultz, a 70-year-old friend who lived with the family, were found inside.
.
Authorities said the teen — who they did not immediately name — was taken into custody without incident. It’s unclear whether anyone else was in the house at the time of the shooting.
Investigators believe a “Century Arms semiautomatic rifle” was used in the deadly shooting, according to the news release.

You’ve got two ways to win more than $300 million this week.
But the odds of winning either lottery aren’t as good as they used to be.
The Mega Millions jackpot reached $306 million when no one won the top prize in Tuesday’s drawing. Its next drawing is Friday night.
.
And Powerball’s jackpot stands at $384 million after no one won Wednesday’s drawing. Its next drawing comes Saturday night.
Both games offering $300 million prizes at the same time has been rare in the past. But it’s about to become more common. That’s because there are now longer odds in both games, leading to more frequent large jackpots.
