Time Travel Is Possible But Only To The Future, English Physicist Says

We may be able to book our ticket to the future someday — it’ll just be a one-way trip.

In a presentation at the British Science Festival, particle physicist Brian Cox said that time travel is possible but only in one direction.

“The central question is, can you build a time machine? The answer is yes, you can go into the future,” the University of Manchester professor told the audience during his hour-long speech on Tuesday, according to The Telegraph. “You’ve got almost total freedom of movement in the future.”

Cox detailed how time travel to the future is possible under Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity. Traveling hundreds, or even thousands of years into the future, could be accomplished if someone was traveling at an incredibly fast pace, close to the speed of light.

Magma Blob Beneath Afar Rift In Ethiopia Puzzles Scientists

The Afar Rift in Ethiopia is marked by enormous gashes that signal the breakup of the African continent and the beginnings of a new ocean basin, scientists think.

The fractures appear eerily similar to seafloor spreading centers, the volcanic ridges that mark the boundaries between two pieces of oceanic crust. Along the ridges, lava bubbles up and new crust is created, slowly widening the ocean basin.

But a look deep beneath the Afar Rift reveals the birth announcements may be premature. “It’s not as close to fully formed seafloor spreading as we thought,” said Kathy Whaler, a geophysicist at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Whaler and her colleagues have spotted 120 cubic miles (500 cubic kilometers) of magma sitting in the mantle under the Afar Rift. Hot liquids like magma like to rise, so the discovery is a conundrum.

Earth’s Core Spins In Two Different Directions, Groundbreaking Research Reveals

Researchers may have just solved a 300-year-old riddle.

As part of a study to determine the direction in which Earth’s core spins, scientists in the United Kingdom and Switzerland analyzed seismic readings from earthquakes from the past few decades.

But, instead of finding out whether the planet’s center rotates eastward or westward, the team discovered a surprising answer to the question that’s evaded scientists for centuries: It’s both.

“The link is simply explained in terms of equal and opposite action,” lead researcher Dr. Philip Livermore, of the University of Leeds, said in a released statement. “The magnetic field pushes eastwards on the inner core, causing it to spin faster than Earth, but it also pushes in the opposite direction in the liquid outer core, which creates a westward motion.”

Finding Zen: Easy Ways to Cultivate More Inner Peace

HeartMath, widely recognized for its science-based solutions for stress, as well as a personal wellness technology innovator, explores the scientific meaning behind internal “Zen” and how people can easily reduce stress while increasing internal happiness.

Often, we define peacefulness by the absence of stress — a neutral, inactive, state. However, is peace really just a passive state? For most people, adopting the life of a “Zen master” and dedicating endless hours to meditation simply isn’t an option. Interestingly enough, science is helping to define an active peace state that is achievable with just minutes of daily practice.

Active peace can be described as an increased inner clarity, a feeling of inner calm, and a deeper sense of inner balance. This state of active peace is referred to psychophysiological coherence. Science has shown a correlation between coherence and our ability to think, act, and decision-make. Cultivating coherence, or a deeper internal peace, can actually make us more efficient and more capable of experiencing a meaningful and connected life.

The body responds favorably to the coherence state as well — emotional and mental states are revitalized, and the body’s immune and hormonal balance improves.

The Peanut at the Heart of our Galaxy

Two groups of astronomers have used data from ESO telescopes to make the best three-dimensional map yet of the central parts of the Milky Way. They have found that the inner regions take on a peanut-like, or X-shaped, appearance from some angles. This odd shape was mapped by using public data from ESO’s VISTA survey telescope along with measurements of the motions of hundreds of very faint stars in the central bulge.

One of the most important and massive parts of the galaxy is the galactic bulge. This huge central cloud of about 10 000 million stars spans thousands of light-years, but its structure and origin were not well understood.

Unfortunately, from our vantage point from within the galactic disc, the view of this central region — at about 27 000 light-years’ distance — is heavily obscured by dense clouds of gas and dust. Astronomers can only obtain a good view of the bulge by observing longer wavelength light, such as infrared radiation, which can penetrate the dust clouds.

Earlier observations from the 2MASS infrared sky survey had already hinted that the bulge had a mysterious X-shaped structure. Now two groups of scientists have used new observations from several of ESO’s telescopes to get a much clearer view of the bulge’s structure.

New Element 115, Ununpentium, May Join Periodic Table

The periodic table of the elements has grown ever since the first version was published by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. And now scientists in Sweden suggest it’s time to add yet another element to the table.

New research confirms the existence of a super-heavy, radioactive element with atomic number 115. Its temporary name is ununpentium (Uup), as the element has yet to be named formally. The research was conducted at the GSI accelerator facility near Darmstadt, Germany, where scientists are known for having discovered six other elements since the early 1980s.

“This was a very successful experiment and is one of the most important in the field in recent years,” lead researcher Dr. Dirk Rudolph, physics professor at the University of Lund in Sweden, said in a written statement.

Evidence for element 115 was first discovered by Russian scientists in 2004. But additional research now has confirmed that the element’s atomic number — the number of protons in the nucleus of one atom of the substance — is 115, BBC News reports.

Fossil Proteins Resurrected From Four Billion Years Ago, May Hold Clues To Early Life

Researchers have reconstructed the structure of 4-billion-year-old proteins.

The primeval proteins, described today (Aug. 8) in the journal Structure, could reveal new insights about the origin of life, said study co-author José Manuel Sanchez Ruíz, a physical chemist at the University of Granada in Spain.

Exactly how life emerged on Earth more than 3 billion years ago is a mystery. Some scientists believe that lightning struck the primordial soup in ammonia-rich oceans, producing the complex molecules that formed the precursors to life. Others believe that chemical reactions at deep-sea hydrothermal vents gave rise to cell membranes and simple cellular pumps. And still others believe that space rocks brought the raw ingredients for life — or perhaps even life itself — to Earth.

But it’s difficult to recreate events that happened so far in the distant past.

Rayna Rison Cold Case Murder Solved, Ex-Boyfriend In Custody: Cops

A cold case more than 20 years old has finally been solved in the death of a teenage girl, with her alleged killer finally behind bars, cops said.

Jason Tibbs, a 38-year-old man from Indiana, is accused of killing his then 16-year-old girlfriend, Rayna Rison, back in 1993, the AP reported.

Rison’s disappearance gained national attention and was featured on “America’s Most Wanted.” Her car was found empty just a few miles outside of LaPorte, Indiana. A week after finding the car, police found Tibbs’ letterman jacket hanging up on a tree branch. A month later, fishermen found Rison’s body in a pond a few miles away from the car.

Following a lead, detectives questioned a former friend of Tibbs, Eric Freeman, two months ago. Freeman admitted to police he drove Tibbs to Rayna Rison’s workplace at the Pine Lake Animal Hospital, where he watched the alleged former couple argue.
