Did you know that the particles in a sneeze travel at 100 miles per hour? Find out more fun facts about sneezing.
Why do we sneeze? The long-standing answer has been that sneezing is a reflex. When irritants — such as germs, dust, pollen, animal dander, or pollutants, just to name just a few — infiltrate the nose lining, the brain sends out a signal to get rid of it. That triggers a deep breath, which gets held in the lungs. As a result, the chest muscles tighten and pressure builds. The tongue pushes against the roof of the mouth, forcing breath to come out fast through the nose — Achoo!

Thanks to the residents of a Texas city and a Facebook campaign that has gone viral, an abused dog who was was left for dead in a garbage bag has been given a new chance at life.
The pooch, who has since been named “Buck,” was reportedly found on Jan. 5, after a local resident of Conroe, Tex., noticed that a garbage bag left on the side of the road and “tied to a t-post of a fence” was moving. He tore the bag open and was shocked to find the 3-year-old mixed breed, covered in blood and weakened by the cold, inside.

PORTLAND, Maine — A smuggling ring brought narwhal tusks from the Canadian Artic into Maine in a trailer with a secret compartment and then illegally sold them to American buyers, officials said.
Andrew Zarauskas, of Union, N.J., and Jay Conrad, of Lakeland, Tenn., will be arraigned in Bangor, Maine, next week on 29 federal smuggling and money laundering charges each.
For nearly a decade, two Canadians smuggled the whale tusks into Maine and shipped them via FedEx to Zarauskas, Conrad and other unnamed American buyers, according to an indictment.

Life for killer whales in the ocean is infinitely different, and many would say far better, than a life of captivity in a concrete tank. In the wild, most orcas stay near or with their families for life, travel up to 100 miles a day, and display complex communal rituals that provide stability, cooperation and regular opportunities for the unbridled expression of sheer joy.
Orcas are smart—among the most intelligent species in the world—making them particularly unsuitable to captivity, as I explain in my book Death at SeaWorld. Few people realize that killer whales are members of the family Delphinidae, making them the planet’s largest dolphins, giant cousins to the far more common bottlenose (think TV’s Flipper) and other species of seagoing dolphins. Orcas not only have the largest brain of any dolphin, but at 12 pounds it is also four times larger than the human brain, and second only to the sperm whale in heft and volume.

SAN FRANCISCO — Howard Kuljian and his family were out for a walk on a damp, overcast morning at Big Lagoon beach, playing fetch with their dog Fran as 10-foot surf churned the water just feet away like a washing machine.
Signs near the beach warned of “sneaker waves,” the kind that suddenly roar ashore.
Kuljian tossed a stick that took the dog down to the water’s edge, and in an instant, authorities said, a wave swallowed it, setting off a nightmarish scramble.

This video is really fantastic, it show the good side of our human species. They worked so hard with one little knife to free the whale, it is somewhat frightening when you consider that the whale was larger than the boat. But the whale knew they were trying to help it and didn’t panic, in which case they might have all died.

Brown tree snakes in Guam have wildlife officials there seeing red. That’s why the officials are air-dropping poisoned mice as a lethal treat for the mildly venomous serpents, an invasive species that has devastated native animal populations on the Pacific island, the BBC reported.

Though we’re sure they have their reasons for existing, we consider moths to be the ‘black sheep’ cousin of butterflies. They have those dull wings, they eat our sweaters and they do things like lay eggs in carpets. (We’ll let that one sink in for a moment.) Moths also have a distinct way of startling you by flying spastically out of cupboards, closets and near light sources. No wonder we’ve seen an uptick of people asking for ways to get rid of moths.
