With a blistering attack on the government that extradited him, Marc Emery, the self-proclaimed “Prince of Pot,” returned home to Canada on Tuesday after having served four years in a federal prison in Louisiana for selling marijuana seeds to Americans. Emery, who has started two political parties dedicated to legalizing marijuana in Canada, promised to get right back to work speaking about marijuana policy around the world.
“It’s not about getting high,” Emery told reporters at the airport in Windsor, Ontario, where he suggested that his wife, Jodie, should be elected to Parliament. “It’s about solving a major injustice. Once we get past the legalization part, we’re owed an apology.”

It is one of the big scientific mysteries of Alzheimer’s disease: Why do some people whose brains accumulate the plaques and tangles so strongly associated with Alzheimer’s not develop the disease?
Now, a series of studies by suggests a possible answer, one that could lead to new treatments if confirmed by other research.
The memory and thinking problems of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, which affect an estimated seven million Americans, may be related to a failure in the brain’s stress response system, the new research suggests. If this system is working well, it can protect the brain from abnormal Alzheimer’s proteins; if it gets derailed, critical areas of the brain start degenerating.

Nick Hanauer seems to have got more than a little peeved over the way that TED didn’t post up his little 5 minute speech. Vague insinuations that it was because he was talking about inequality are floating around. The real problem is that he was really talking about the economics of taxation. Unfortunately, the economics of taxation seems to be a subject he is deeply ignorant of. Which isn’t really a great advertisement for the sort of informative talks by experts that TED likes to broadcast on this here internet.

More than 29 million American adults have diabetes, and a quarter of them don’t even know it, a new report shows.
That’s up from 26 million in 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, and represents more than 9 percent of the population.
And another 86 million — a third of the adult population — are headed down the road to diabetes, with blood sugar levels high enough to mark them as pre-diabetic.

Among whites, there was no association between race consciousness and blood pressure, but race consciousness was associated with poor ratings of adherence.
.
African Americans with a hypervigilant sense of being black may have an increased risk of hypertension, a cross-sectional analysis found.
Among 266 patients in urban clinics in Baltimore who were surveyed, being a race-conscious black patient was associated with significantly higher diastolic blood pressure (roughly 5 mmHg) and a tendency toward a higher systolic blood pressure (about 4 mmHg) than black patients who were not preoccupied with race.
There was no similar effect on race-conscious whites, reported Lisa A. Cooper, MD, MPH, director of the Johns Hopkins Center to Eliminate Cardiovascular Health Disparities in Baltimore, and colleagues in the American Journal of Hypertension.
The findings suggest that heightened race consciousness could at least in part account for the disproportionately high rate of hypertension in black Americans — the highest prevalence of any group in the U.S. and one of the highest rates in the world, researchers said.
