The bodies of five young children were found in the woods of Alabama on Tuesday, and police said they are believed to be siblings who were reported missing in South Carolina a week ago.

The children’s father, Timothy Ray Jones Jr., 32, was in custody in Mississippi, where police stopped his blood-soaked Cadillac Escalade over the weekend, a prosecutor told NBC News.

“God help me and God help my son,” Jones Jr.’s father told NBC News after learning that NBC News had found the five bodies in plastic bags in an undeveloped clearing off Highway 10 in Wilcox County, Alabama.

ISIS, IS, the Islamic State, ISIL — the international community can’t seem to decide what to call the Islamic extremists who have been terrorizing the Middle East, and now the French government has announced it will use yet another name for them, which is reportedly upsetting the group.

The French foreign ministry released a statement earlier this week referencing the Islamic State group as “Daesh.” The new moniker is a transliteration of an acronym of the group’s Arabic name “al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham. It is also similar to the arabic word that means “to trample.”

France’s foreign minister Laurent Fabius explained that he views the organization as “a terrorist group, not a state.”

A day after the People’s Climate March filled the streets of New York, a smaller group of protesters are engaging in non-violent, direct action against climate change. By conducting a sit-in on the steps of the New York Stock Exchange and blocking lower Broadway, organizers say they are confronting “the system that both causes and profits from the crisis that is threatening humanity.”

The protest does not have a permit, and some participants have pledged to risk arrest during the sit-in.

What does an atom sound like? Apparently it’s a “D-note.”

That’s according to scientists at Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden, who have revealed in a new study that they’ve captured the sound of a single atom.

“We have opened a new door into the quantum world by talking and listening to atoms,” study co-author Per Delsing, a physics professor at the university, said in a written statement. “Our long term goal is to harness quantum physics so that we can benefit from its laws, for example in extremely fast computers.”

Sexual violence happens far too often — and a recent report is proof that something needs to change.

On Sept. 5, the CDC published a report on its National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey. Using data collected in 2011, the report examines intimate partner violence, sexual violence and stalking based on a telephone survey which polled 12,727 people over the age of 18 in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Out of all the participants, a total of 6,879 were women and 5,848 were men.

Defining rape as “completed forced penetration,” “attempted forced penetration” or “completed alcohol- or drug-facilitated penetration,” researchers found that approximately 19.3 percent of American women and 1.7 percent of American men have been raped in their lifetimes.
