Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday fired back at Jon Stewart after the comedian accused him of dragging his feet on legislation that would benefit first responders of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Stewart, a longtime advocate for 9/11 responders, tore into Republican lawmakers during an interview with “Fox News Sunday” for their reluctance to reauthorize the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF), which is facing a significant funding lapse.
“I want to make it clear that this has never been dealt with compassionately by Sen. McConnell,” Stewart told Fox News, referring to past VCF legislation. “He has always held out to the very last minute, and only then, under intense lobbying and public shaming, has he even deigned to move on it.”

When a prominent YouTuber named Lewis Hilsenteger (aka “Unbox Therapy”) was testing out this fall’s new iPhone model, the XS, he noticed something: His skin was extra smooth in the device’s front-facing selfie cam, especially compared with older iPhone models. Hilsenteger compared it to a kind of digital makeup. “I do not look like that,” he said in a video demonstrating the phenomenon. “That’s weird … I look like I’m wearing foundation.”
He’s not the only one who has noticed the effect, either, though Apple has not acknowledged that it’s doing anything different than it has before. Speaking as a longtime iPhone user and amateur photographer, I find it undeniable that Portrait mode—a marquee technology in the latest edition of the most popular phones in the world—has gotten glowed up. Over weeks of taking photos with the device, I realized that the camera had crossed a threshold between photograph and fauxtograph. I wasn’t so much “taking pictures” as the phone was synthesizing them.

When Cynthia Meachum lost her job in 2015, it was the best day of her life. To hear the 65-year-old tell it, she got the bad news, waved off her boss’s apologies and nearly skipped away.
“I wanted to do cartwheels,” she says.
Meachum had been close to retiring from her gig as a field service engineer in the semiconductor industry anyway. Getting laid off meant she could fully throw herself into her true passion: finding Forrest Fenn’s hidden treasure, worth millions.
She already had the “war room,” a converted library in her Rio Rancho, New Mexico, home where the walls are papered with giant maps of Yellowstone National Park and nearby forests. She had the resources, including manuals on fly fishing in Montana, the domain chasingfennstreasure.com, and connections to an international community of searchers.

When in dietary doubt, we ask nutrition experts to show us how to leverage our food for optimal performance. This time, we asked seven of our go-to diet and sports nutrition gurus to dish on their go-to meals. Their choices may surprise you.

Eating like a nutritionist isn’t necessarily synonymous with a too-many-veggies, zero-sugar diet. Adopting a nutritionist’s meal plan merely requires a nutritious, balanced plate and finding what works best for you. Photo from Cameron Whitman/Stocksy.

In mid-May, Carolina Panthers running back and unbreakable bowling ball in a football uniform Christian McCaffrey told GQ that in a perfect world, he’d get at least nine hours of sleep every night. “I can wake up on my own,” he said of hitting that elusive nine-plus hours mark. “I feel great and I’m ready to go.” McCaffrey isn’t alone in this regard, at least among pro athletes: Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald aims for somewhere between nine and 11 hours, while Roger Federer and LeBron James (allegedly) try to get 12 hours of sleep a night.
The consensus view, passed down over the decades via public-service announcement infographics, is that adults should get somewhere between seven and eight hours of shut-eye. But by snoozing a few extra hours, are the world’s tip-top athletes—whose jobs require them to stay in outrageously good shape—on to something the rest of us aren’t?

Ice is melting in unprecedented ways as summer approaches in the Arctic. In recent days, observations have revealed a record-challenging melt event over the Greenland ice sheet, while the extent of ice over the Arctic Ocean has never been this low in mid-June during the age of weather satellites.
Greenland saw temperatures soar up to 40 degrees above normal Wednesday, while open water exists in places north of Alaska where it seldom, if ever, has in recent times.
It’s “another series of extreme events consistent with the long-term trend of a warming, changing Arctic,” said Zachary Labe, a climate researcher at the University of California at Irvine.
And the abnormal warmth and melting of ice in the Arctic may be messing with our weather.

Two-year-old Maxwell lives in Denver with his twin sister, Riley, his parents, Amber and Mark, and their cat, Nittany. He loves hugs, his sister and bow ties. He was born with a very rare genetic disorder that could leave him with permanent, severe intellectual and developmental disabilities, and a form of epilepsy that’s not treatable with current medications.
Only about 50 people in the world are known to share Maxwell’s problem. It’s so uncommon that it’s known only by the name of the affected gene: SLC6A1.
His mother, Amber Freed, 38, left her job as a financial analyst in 2017 to devote herself full time to fighting to make that cure possible. Maxwell is a good candidate for treatment using the emerging technology of gene therapy, in which a functioning gene is attached to a harmless virus that can carry the new gene through the body and replace the faulty one.
The Food and Drug Administration has already approved gene therapy for diseases like leukemia and lymphoma, and a team of medical researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, led by Steven Gray, is already working on ways to expand its use to diseases like Maxwell’s.
