You could be swallowing a credit card’s weight in plastic every week

.

Globally, we are ingesting an average of 5 grams of plastic every week, the equivalent of a credit card, a new study suggests.

This plastic contamination comes from “microplastics” — particles smaller than five millimeters — which are making their way into our food, drinking water and even the air.
Around the world, people ingest an average of around 2,000 microplastic particles a week, according to the study by the University of Newcastle, in Australia.
These tiny particles can originate from a variety of sources, including artificial clothes fibers, microbeads found in some toothpastes, or bigger pieces of plastic which gradually break into smaller pieces when they’re thrown away and exposed to the elements.

Flies are insects with a pair of functional wings for flight and a pair of specialized hindwings called halteres for balance. They are classified as an order called Diptera, that name being derived from the Greek δι- di- “two”, and πτερόν pteron “wings”.

6 Toxic Relationship Habits Most People Think Are Normal

.

There’s no class in high school on how to not be a shitty boyfriend or girlfriend. Sure, they teach us the biology of sex, the legality of marriage, and maybe we read a few obscure love stories from the 19th century on how not to be.

But when it comes down to actually handling the nitty-gritty of relationships, we’re given no pointers… or worse, we’re given advice columns in women’s magazines.

Yes, it’s trial-and-error from the get-go. And if you’re like most people, it’s been mostly error.

A New Study Shows Giving Up Alcohol for a Month Can Unlock Lasting Health Benefits

.

You might consider doing a Dry January—going the entire month without picking up a pint of beer or that whiskey you got as a gift—as a way to detox after a couple months of holiday boozing. And although that’s certainly a worthy goal, emerging research suggests the benefits of giving up alcohol for a month go a lot further than a simple post-holiday reset. A new study from the University of Sussex in the UK shows taking part in Dry January can bring about a host of health benefits, like improved sleep, more energy, and weight loss.

The study followed 800 people who participated in Dry January last year and checked in with them over the course of the year. Researchers found those who gave up booze for a month reported drinking less, even seven months later. Even more striking, the participants reported a range of other lasting benefits: 70 percent reported improved overall health, 71 percent slept better, 67 percent had more energy, 58 percent lost weight, and 54 percent had better skin.

“The simple act of taking a month off alcohol helps people drink less in the long term,” University of Sussex psychologist Richard de Visser said in a statement, noting that the wider health benefits often became noticeable shortly after the participants gave up drinking.

‘Hyperalarming’ study shows massive insect loss

.

Insects around the world are in a crisis, according to a small but growing number of long-term studies showing dramatic declines in invertebrate populations. A new report suggests that the problem is more widespread than scientists realized. Huge numbers of bugs have been lost in a pristine national forest in Puerto Rico, the study found, and the forest’s insect-eating animals have gone missing, too.

In 2014, an international team of biologists estimated that, in the past 35 years, the abundance of invertebrates such as beetles and bees had decreased by 45 percent. In places where long-term insect data are available, mainly in Europe, insect numbers are plummeting. A study last year showed a 76 percent decrease in flying insects in the past few decades in German nature preserves.

The latest report, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows that this startling loss of insect abundance extends to the Americas. The study’s authors implicate climate change in the loss of tropical invertebrates.

Can a Night Owl Become a Morning Person?

.

Morning people seem so productive. They get up early, get a lot done before the real day begins, and, according to at least one study, often have a positive outlook on life. They can seem to have an unfair advantage over night owls, who prefer to go to bed late and sleep in—especially in a society that typically operates on a 9-to-5 schedule. It’s possible to change one’s sleep patterns, but do the benefits outweigh the costs? One expert, Ilene Rosen, professor of clinical medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, explains how to shift your circadian rhythm to suit your schedule.

Code: Sleep

Our circadian rhythms are driven by internal clocks that tell us when to fall asleep and when to wake up in a roughly 24-hour period. They have been shown to be about 47% genetic, says Dr. Rosen, and have even been detected in utero. People’s preferences for waking early or sleeping in are called chronotypes; they are different from disorders, and don’t pose a problem unless they interfere with people’s lifestyles. “I know nurses who choose to work the night shift, probably because they have adapted their job to match their preference,” says Dr. Rosen, who is on the faculty of Penn’s Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology and the immediate past president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. But most people don’t have the option of going to bed at 4 a.m. and waking eight hours later.

When a Promotion Means Losing Friends at Work

Getting promoted to management brings some welcome benefits, from higher pay and perks to elevated status. After the congratulations are over, however, many new bosses ponder a more subtle change: Why don’t I have friends at the office anymore?

Tim Tolan first noticed it when happy hour rolled around after his first big promotion at a previous employer. As a vice president overseeing several of his former peers, he could see the parking lot from his new office. “I looked out my window Friday afternoon, and there went the gang,” he says. “I also had a view of my former friends every day as they’d leave for lunch.”

Co-workers’ barbecues and cookouts went on without him. “The flow of invitations came to an abrupt halt,” Mr. Tolan says. Conversations stopped when he entered a room. “The moment I walked in there was silence, like they’d seen the dead,” says Mr. Tolan, chief executive of the Tolan Group, a St. Augustine, Fla., health-care affiliate of the Sanford Rose executive-search network. “It was a little bit of a wake-up call.”
