What’s a chef without their knives? Knives are an extension of a chef’s body—a tool that shapes, crafts and manipulates ingredients to produce an expression of their creativity and an appetizing meal for customers. Without quality knives a chef could be rendered useless. This where expert bladesmith Quintin Middleton of “Middleton Made Knives” shines.
In an interview with Francis Lam, host of The Splendid Table, Quintin Middleton discussed his childhood love of swords to the rise of bladesmith career.
The Saint Stephen, South Carolina, bladesmith found himself enamored by the 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, Conan the Barbarian. He wanted to be Conan so much that he made a makeshift rubber sword from his swing set and chased his brothers around. Years later, with rubber swords behind him, Quintin began training under his mentor Jason Knight who taught him how to make hunting knives and swords, then his dreams led him to a different craft—making chef knives.
Before Middleton Made Knives took off, Quintin decided to call up every top chef in Charleston, South Carolina, only to be turned down. Still determined to make a name for himself, he reached out to friend and former Cypress executive chef Craig Deihl, who gave him some assistance.

Weeks after a call went out on Facebook for people to “storm Area 51,” the top-secret United States military site in the Nevada desert that is said to hide aliens, a similar event has been organized to “find dat big boi” — the Loch Ness monster — in Scotland, setting off mild alarm bells.
The Scotland event invited people last week to storm Loch Ness — the deep, freshwater lake in the Scottish Highlands whose most fabled tenant is said to be an underwater creature.
“Nessie can’t hide from us all,” the invitation said, echoing the Area 51 event set up by a California man in June to “Let’s see them aliens” because “They can’t stop all of us.”

On a punishingly hot afternoon last June, Ali Cole stepped into Philadelphia’s elegant, French Renaissance Revival Bellevue Hotel carrying Father’s Day gifts for a man she didn’t know existed two months earlier ― her biological father, who was not the man who had raised her.
Until last spring, Ali had no reason to question whether the man she grew up believing was her father really was.

It happened to me many times in the past. Growing up, I always had an opinion about everything.
Having an opinion doesn’t mean you know everything. It just means you have something to say. You could be wrong.
But often times, my teachers, friends, girlfriends, co-workers, and even friends would immediately say things like, “That’s not true!” So gradually, I gave up speaking my mind. I became afraid.

At 4 a.m. on June 21, South Philadelphia residents were awoken by the sound of a large explosion: The Philadelphia Energy Solutions oil refinery was on fire for the second time in two weeks. Neighbors watched as the flames turned into a giant mushroom cloud and as the mushroom cloud turned into a thick blanket of black smoke. The explosion was so big it was recorded by a satellite in space.
“I could hear it from my house,” said one resident, PennEnvironment Executive Director David Masur. “We were two blocks out of the shelter-in-place radius.”
The explosion occurred close to where a large volume of hydrofluoric acid was stored ― and if that had caught fire, it could have done devastating damage to the community, Masur explained.
“If that had exploded, you would have had a huge hydrofluoric acid cloud, which has all sorts of negative health effects depending on exposure. We would have had to evacuate a 7- to 10-mile radius, that’s 1.1 million people. It would have been catastrophic.”
