Before you climb, you’re going to spend a lot of time watching other people climb, so you’d better make sure you like your climbing buddies. In a rock-climbing gym, which is where you should start, you’ll encounter two beginner-level disciplines—bouldering and top-roping. Most gyms offer both, but some places may have a more robust community around one or the other. The two specialties also tend to attract different kinds of people: Bouldering is great for extroverts and larger groups, and top roping is ideal for those who want to learn with a single friend. It may be worth visiting several gyms until you find a group and style you like.

A new video has surfaced that purportedly shows the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning recovering a J-15 strike fighter. The landing is perhaps the first video sourced from outside of Chinese state media to show operations on China’s first aircraft carrier.
The video likely comes from someone aboard the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Mustin, which was following the Chinese carrier strike group from a distance.
The date of the video isn’t clear. While the voices in the clip are speaking English, most of it is unintelligible. As a J-15 carrier-based fighter lands on Liaoning, a female sailor’s voice is clearly heard exclaiming, “Ooh!”
In the video, you can also see a Type 055 warship, which the U.S. Department of Defense classifies as a guided-missile cruiser, trailing the carrier. The camera also focuses on a Type 052D guided-missile destroyer leading the carrier strike group. Both surface warships reportedly broke off from the strike group before the events in the historic photograph showing Mustin’s commanding and executive officers watching the fleet from afar.

NASA’s Perseverance rover made its Martian debut this week—and strapped to its underbelly is one of NASA’s most daring scientific creations. Weighing at just four pounds (or 1.5 pounds on Mars), Ingenuity will become the first rotorcraft to explore the skies of another world.
To ensure the helicopter would be ready for its Red Planet debut, engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, developed two Ingenuity prototypes. They subjected one prototype to rigorous environmental testing to see whether it could survive chilling temperatures and vibrations associated with lift-off and landing. The other was developed specifically for flight tests, which took place in a 25-foot- diameter vacuum-sealed space simulation chamber on JPL’s campus.
Now, it’s almost showtime. Once separated from the rover, Percy’s otherworldly helo will have just 30 martian solar days (commonly called sols, which are each 24 hours, 39 minutes, and 35 seconds) to conduct a series of up to five test flights, each lasting anywhere from 30 to 90 seconds. The helicopter’s most ambitious hops, nearly all of which will be choreographed by Ingenuity itself, could take it as high as a single-story building and far as 1,000 feet.

After breakfast one morning in August, the mathematician Terence Tao opened an email from three physicists he didn’t know. The trio explained that they’d stumbled across a simple formula that, if true, established an unexpected relationship between some of the most basic and important objects in linear algebra.
The formula “looked too good to be true,” said Tao, who is a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, a Fields medalist, and one of the world’s leading mathematicians. “Something this short and simple — it should have been in textbooks already,” he said. “So my first thought was, no, this can’t be true.”
Then he thought about it some more.
The physicists — Stephen Parke of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Xining Zhang of the University of Chicago, and Peter Denton of Brookhaven National Laboratory — had arrived at the mathematical identity about two months earlier while grappling with the strange behavior of particles called neutrinos.

One of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed involved an otherwise unprepossessing house cat named Billy. This was some years ago, shortly after I had moved into a little rental house in the Hudson Valley. Billy, a big, bad-tempered old tomcat, belonged to the previous tenant, a guy by the name of Phil. Phil adored that cat, and the cat—improbably, given his otherwise unenthusiastic feelings about humanity—returned the favor.
On the day Phil vacated the house, he wrestled an irate Billy into a cat carrier, loaded him into a moving van, and headed toward his new apartment, in Brooklyn. Thirty minutes down I-84, in the middle of a drenching rainstorm, the cat somehow clawed his way out of the carrier. Phil pulled over to the shoulder but found that, from the driver’s seat, he could neither coax nor drag the cat back into captivity. Moving carefully, he got out of the van, walked around to the other side, and opened the door a gingerly two inches—whereupon Billy shot out, streaked unscathed across two lanes of seventy-mile-per-hour traffic, and disappeared into the wide, overgrown median. After nearly an hour in the pouring rain trying to make his own way to the other side, Phil gave up and, heartbroken, continued onward to his newly diminished home.
Some weeks later, at a little before seven in the morning, I woke up to a banging at my door. Braced for an emergency, I rushed downstairs. The house had double-glass doors flanked by picture windows, which together gave out onto almost the entire yard, but I could see no one. I was standing there, sleep-addled and confused when up onto his hind legs and into my line of vision popped an extremely scrawny and filthy gray cat.

In a surprising new paper, scientists say they’ve nailed down a physical model for a warp drive, which flies in the face of what we’ve long thought about the crazy concept of warp speed travel: that it requires exotic, negative forces.
To best understand what the breakthrough means, you’ll need a quick crash course on the far-out idea of traveling through folded space.
The colloquial term “warp drive” comes from science fiction, most famously Star Trek. The faster-than-light warp drive of the Federation works by colliding matter and antimatter and converting the explosive energy to propulsion. Star Trek suggests that this extraordinary power alone pushes the ship at faster-than-light speeds.
Scientists have been studying and theorizing about faster-than-light space travel for decades. One major reason for our interest is pure pragmatism: without warp drive, we’re probably never making it to a neighboring star system. The closest such trip is still four years long at light speed.
