And why you shouldn’t either!
They may have been touted as the ultimate diet food during the low-fat/no-fat craze of the late 1980s and 1990s, but don’t be fooled. Rice cakes can have a glycemic index rating as high as 91 (pure glucose has a rating of 100), making it the kind of carbohydrate that will send your blood sugar on a roller coaster ride. This is bad for weight loss and for your health.

Diego Durrell usually counts his smoothie routine as one of the healthiest parts of his day – but now he believes it almost
killed him. “I basically was staring death in the face with this illness. It was not fun. It was very, very scary,” he said. Durrell is one of 118 people in eight states who, according to the Centers for Disease Control , contracted acute Hepatitis A after eating a frozen berry blend sold at Costco.

The mind-numbingly painful headaches known as migraines may alter the structure of your brain.
Those excruciating episodes can cause mysterious brain lesions, temporarily destroy gray matter and increase the risk of stroke, according to a study published today in the journal Neurology. Though migraines affect a large segment of the population — at least 18 percent of women and 6 percent of men will have a migraine at some point — scientists are unsure as to why they might change the brain’s structure.
“We found that migraine might be a risk factor for structural changes in the brain, [but] at this point, we don’t know what these abnormalities mean for patients with migraines,” said Sait Ashina, MD, a neurologist at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City and co-author of the study.
Pain in Your Brain
Researchers did a meta-analysis of eight different studies, compiling and summarizing the individual results into one large set of data. The data suggest that patients who have migraines with “auras” are 70 percent more likely to have some sort of brain damage, said Richard Lipton, MD, a neurologist at the Montefiore Medical Center in New York City and also a co-author of the study.
There are two types of migraines — migraines with aura and migraines without. Auras usually indicate that a migraine is on the way and may cause a patient to see flashing lights, bright zig-zag lines or spots of black.

By T. Jared Bunch, MD
One of the most common statements that I hear from patients is “I don’t want to take drugs, what are my alternatives? Are there any ways to treat atrial fibrillation naturally?” I do live in a state where there is a tremendous interest in natural therapies. Numerous herbal and nonherbal supplement companies are based in Utah. Also, there are many multi-level marketing companies that bring these therapies directly to your home. In this environment, it is not uncommon for me to be asked these questions multiple times in a day.
Most of the time patients are nervous about asking questions about nontraditional approaches in medicine. The nervous feelings often stem from fears of the physician not understanding or approving of alternative approaches or that these approaches may be in opposition to what the physician may want. In my practice I want my patients to feel comfortable discussing any matter with me. I want to learn about their use of herbal and nonherbal supplements. If they have a new agent that has brought them benefit, I typically will research it to learn more about the substance and the potential health related benefits or risks. In general the use of herbal and nonherbal supplements and alternative approaches to health care has increased dramatically, so it is important that patients and physicians discuss these therapies without any hesitation.
This background information gets me to my topic of this blog, what are the natural or alternative therapies available to treat or possibly prevent atrial fibrillation?

Wesley Warren Jr., better known as “The Man With The 132-Lb. Scrotum,” has two objectives right now: He wants to make money and speak the truth.
In May of 2008, in a household mishap, the Las Vegas man took a blow to his right testicle. “I woke up the next day, and my scrotum was the size of a honeydew melon,” he tells Marc Lamont Hill on HuffPost Live. “My personal hell was just beginning.”
With every passing month, Warren’s scrotum grew 3 pounds or more. And with no health insurance, he had little opportunity to seek help, until he became internationally known for his freakish bulge.
To cradle his watermelon-sized sex organ, he wore a hooded sweatshirt as pants, using the hood as a makeshift scrotum sling.

Lawrence Yahle refused to believe his dad was dead — and he was right.
The 17-year-old Ohio resident rushed into his father Anthony’s Kettering Medical Center hospital room after doctors told him his dad could not be revived, according to ABC News.
“Dad, you’re not going to die today,” Yahle said as he burst into the room.
“Moments later,” ABC News reports, Anthony Yahle’s heart monitor “showed signs of life,” and doctors were able to successfully revive him, 45 minutes after his heart had stopped beating and he had been declared dead.
