Malcolm Young, who founded the Australian rock band AC/DC along with his brother Angus, has died at age 64 after suffering from dementia for several years, the band said on its Facebook page on Saturday.
Malcolm Young was a songwriter, backing vocalist and rhythm guitarist for AC/DC, a hard rock and heavy metal band that was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Their hits included “Highway to Hell” from 1979 and “Back in Black” and “You Shook Me All Night Long” from 1980.

The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, the civil rights leader and former presidential candidate, announced Friday that he has Parkinson’s disease.
Jackson, 76, said he had found it “increasingly difficult to perform routine tasks” and get around in recent years. After initially resisting due to his work, Jackson said, he relented and sought medical testing.
“Recognition of the effects of this disease on me has been painful, and I have been slow to grasp the gravity of it,” Jackson said in a statement released through the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, his social change group.

For the first time, the Food and Drug Administration has approved a digital pill — a medication embedded with a sensor that can tell doctors whether, and when, patients take their medicine.
The approval, announced late on Monday, marks a significant advance in the growing field of digital devices designed to monitor medicine-taking and to address the expensive, longstanding problem that millions of patients do not take drugs as prescribed.
Experts estimate that so-called nonadherence or noncompliance to medication costs about $100 billion a year, much of it because patients get sicker and need additional treatment or hospitalization.

One week after it became the site of the deadliest mass shooting in modern Texas history, the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs reopened to the public on Sunday.
Instead, 26 handcrafted chairs marked locations where worshippers were fatally shot. Each chair had a name inscribed on the backrest, and a red rose. An audio recording of scripture readings by church staff played on a loudspeaker.
The scene of an unspeakable crime had been transformed into a moving tribute to those who lost their lives.

Medical researchers and government health policymakers, a cautious lot, normally take pains to keep expectations modest when they’re discussing some new finding or treatment.
They warn about studies’ limitations. They point out what isn’t known. They emphasize that correlation doesn’t mean causation.
So it’s startling to hear prominent experts sound positively excited about a new shingles vaccine that an advisory committee to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved last month.
“This really is a sea change,” said Dr. Rafael Harpaz, a veteran shingles researcher at the C.D.C.
Dr. William Schaffner, preventive disease specialist at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, said, “This vaccine has spectacular initial protection rates in every age group. The immune system of a 70- or 80-year-old responds as if the person were only 25 or 30.”

Twenty people have accused Kevin Spacey of “inappropriate behavior” during his tenure at a London theater.
The Old Vic theater on Thursday released findings from an investigation into Spacey’s time as artistic director, a position he held from 2004 to 2015. The review, which was conducted by an external law firm, comes amid a wave of sexual misconduct accusations against the actor.
The nearly two-week investigation turned up 20 alleged incidents relating to The Old Vic between 1995 and 2013. All but two occurred before 2009, according to the theater.
In all but one case, individuals alleging “inappropriate behavior” by Spacey did not come forward at the time or asked that no formal action be taken, according to a press release issued by The Old Vic. None of the individuals who made allegations against Spacey said they were minors at the time of the incidents, according to the theater, and most shared their testimonies with investigators “on the promise of anonymity.”

The gunman blamed for the deadly rampage in northern California began his killing spree by fatally shooting his wife and stashing her body beneath the floorboards of their home, police revealed Wednesday.
Word of the grim discovery came a day after Kevin Janson Neal gunned down four other people and attacked an elementary school before he was killed by police.
“We were looking for his wife, couldn’t find her yesterday,” said Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said. “We located her dead body concealed under the floor of the residence.”

There has been another mass shooting in the United States – at least 26 people were killed in an attack on a Texas church. The attack comes just one month after the worst mass shooting in the US, and has again raised questions about gun ownership and whether there should be tougher controls.
How does the US compare with other countries?
About 40% of Americans say they own a gun or live in a household with one, according to a 2017 survey, and the rate of murder or manslaughter by firearm is the highest in the developed world. There were more than 11,000 deaths as a result of murder or manslaughter involving a firearm in 2016.

At least 437 people were killed and more than 7,600 others injured after a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Iran’s border with Iraq, authorities said Monday.
In Iran, rescuers who worked through dozens of aftershocks and were hindered by landslides ended their efforts late Monday night/early Tuesday morning, the country’s top emergency management official, Pir-Hossein Kolivand said, according to Reuters.
Many houses in rural areas of Iran are made of mud bricks that can crumble easily in a quake.

“Any type of treatment would be a huge advance from where we are today,” he said, but “the long-term goal has got to be cure.”
