A painting by Amedeo Modigliani fetched $170.4 million at an auction Monday, setting a world record for the artist and achieving the second highest price ever garnered for a work of art at auction.
“Reclining Nude” was sold at Christie’s in Manhattan after a protracted bidding battle. Considered one of his best known works, the 1917-1918 painting nearly created a scandal when it was first exhibited in Paris. It depicts an unknown nude model reclining on a crimson couch and blue cushion.
The previous auction record for a Modigliani was $71 million.

Myths about black fatherhood have already been debunked — by the U. In a 2013 report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that a higher percentage of black fathers eat a meal with their children every day than white or Latino fathers. They also bathe, diaper and dress their children daily at a higher rate than other dads too.
In an essay for CNN, black father Aaron Paxton Arnold wrote, “[B]lack fathers are there all around us. On the streets and in hip-hop culture …” He continued, “If you come to my block you will see black fathers and husbands celebrating with their wives and spending quality time with their children.”
Given notorious rapper stereotypes, pairing fatherhood with hip-hop may seem odd, but that’s not really the case. In fact, there are a serious amount of dads in the…

During the Civil War, the ornate building at Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street, diagonally across from the White House, was a warehouse stuffed with army blankets and uniforms. This fall, after a century and a half of use, misuse, confusion and narrow escapes from destruction, it is reborn as one of the most elegant public spaces in the capital and the nation.
The Renwick Museum, now reimagined and renovated, is qualified once again to be called the “American Louvre,” after the Paris museum that inspired it. It was erected just before the Civil War—the first building in America designed specifically to be an art museum—by one of the country’s most distinguished architects, at the bidding of Washington’s richest and most generous citizen.
The banker and real estate magnate W. W. Corcoran had grown up in Georgetown and made enough money to repay his good fortune with vast good works. He was a major backer of the long-running Washington Monument project, and supported causes and institutions at home and abroad.

From love and disaster to “a miracle of God,” the 96-year-old manual outlines every known plot
The struggling screenwriter need never fear writer’s block again! A 1919 writing manual, unearthed by Slate‘s Rebecca Onion, outlines the 37 basic plots of any possible story.
The 96-year-old manual is called Ten Million Photoplay Plots, and it organizes dramatic situations “without sub-classifications and classified according to their various natures.” It was one of many books written by Wycliff Aber Hill, a prolific peddler of advice-on-writing books, and apparently, a connoisseur of plot. Hill also wrote Ten Million Photography Plots. And if those 20 million weren’t enough, he also wrote several volumes of The Plot Genie.
Hill wasn’t the only person who tried to condense the essence of storytelling down to simple rules. Frederick Palmers created an “encyclopedia” of 36 plot situations in 1922, a Christopher Booker outlined…

The New York Post published a story Wednesday claiming that more women than ever are getting labiaplasty, a surgery to reduce the size of their labia minora, because they want to “look good in their yoga pants.”
“They are keen to avoid so-called ‘camel toe’ or internal ‘twisting’ when they’re working out at top exercise venues such as SoulCycle, Barry’s Bootcamp and the Fhitting Room,” reporter Jane Ridley wrote, quoting a 28-year-old model who said she got the surgery because she was self conscious about her labia minora.
The claim that women are getting labiaplasty because they’re concerned about how their labia look in tight pants is a bold one.

A journey to an island caught between the ancient world and 2015.
The men pack the witch’s mouth with rags. The time for confessions has come and gone. Neighbors crowd into a circle around her, here on this hill of rubbish next to their settlement, Warakum. They watch as the men blindfold her before tying her arms, legs and stomach to a log. They watch as wood is stacked and gasoline poured. They watch as their witch is pushed facedown onto the pyre. Camera phones are held up and aimed. The match is struck and thrown.
This is the consequence of rending the social fabric, of exercising divisive power, the men say to the thing in their midst. This creature at the center of the settlement dwellers is not a friend or a relative, as the crowd might have once thought. It is a poisonous weed, a snek-no-gut underfoot. Adulterers, the AIDS-marked unclean and witches such as this one—these evils must be uprooted from the community. It has been so for as long as any can remember.
The crowd can feel the shush of the flames against the skin of their faces. Then—a low, wet, chewing sound, a sound like a hive of insects eating and eating, as the fire feeds on the pile of refuse. The men roll truck tires over the witch’s trussed, prone figure. The crowd says nothing. This is self-defense. This is a body doing what a body does when a harmful foreign object is located. It marshals its strength, it pushes the object out, it becomes whole and healthy once again.

Very sad news for bacon lovers.
The World Health Organization announced Monday that cured and processed meats like bacon, sausage, hot dogs and ham cause cancer, adding the foods to a top-tier list of carcinogenic substances that includes alcohol, cigarettes, asbestos, and arsenic.
Processed meats can be bundled with these threatening carcinogens because of their link with bowel cancer, according to a report from WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, though their inclusion doesn’t mean that bacon causes cancer at the same rate as, say, smoking.
“For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal (bowel) cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed,” IARC epidemiologist Dr. Kurt Straif said in a statement.

When a marriage lasts for years, it’s natural for some couples to find that their sex life has withered like a lonely lil’ IKEA plant that hasn’t been getting enough sun. While some experts might say this is the time to bust out the lube and get freaky in the boudoir, World’s Funniest host/Old Spice spokesman Terry Crews has a different message entirely: Stop having sex altogether.
In an interview with the Huffington Post, the actor and former football player shared that in an attempt to reconnect with his wife, he went on a “sex fast” for not 30, not 60, but 90 days (an astonishing 50 more days than that of divisively hot heartthrob Josh Hartnett in the 2002 film 40 Days and 40 Nights).
“Ninety days — no sex, all relationship, all talk, all cuddle,” Crews said of the self-inflicted bed death he…

A two-year-old boy died Saturday evening from injuries the toddler suffered when a driver suspected to be under the influence plowed into a crowd at a homecoming parade at Oklahoma State University, according to police. Three other people were killed at the scene of horrific crash and more than 40 were injured, police said.
The 25-year-old driver of the car, Adacia Chambers, was charged with driving under the influence and taken into custody, Stillwater police Capt. Kyle Gibbs said at an afternoon news conference.
Chambers allegedly drove the 2014 Hyundai Elantra into an unmanned police motorcycle before striking the crowd at around 10:30 a.m. (11:30 a.m. ET), according to a statement from the Stillwater Police Department.
