Native Americans living in the Northeast, like Game of Thrones fans, knew one thing at this time of year: Winter is coming. As such, now was the time for one last glut of food before a four-month-at-least period of traveling along with migrating prey in order to hunt for fresh food. In that sense, yes, Native American harvest feasts are a clear primogenitor to today’s Thanksgiving.
But the truth is more complex. As Thanksgiving matured as a holiday in the Americas, many of the inhabitants in the United States — Native Americans, settlers and enslaved Africans — contributed elements of our modern Thanksgiving meal to the table.
If Thanksgiving is an American tradition, then its roots are as varied and widespread as America, as well. To put it simply: There are a lot of ingredients in this melting pot. To find out the roots of many of our favorite culinary traditions, Mic spoke with Michael Twitty, culinary historian and founder of the blog Afroculinaria.

There are foods that should be eaten in moderation (think, ice cream, cookies, cake, cocktails), and then there are foods (or maybe I should say “food-like products”) that should probably never be eaten all.
No doubt, items in the latter category may have a certain “tasty” appeal (honestly, who doesn’t love Cheetos?), but since they offer hardly any nutritional value and in some cases might even pose a threat to your health, for the most part it’s better to avoid them altogether.
What kinds of foods and products fall into this realm? Well, we recruited the help of a several nutritionists and dieticians to find out. Of course, no one eats perfectly 100 percent of the time, but if anyone out there best knows what foods to avoid, it’s definitely the experts who make a living showing others how to eat healthy.

The largest diamond found in over 100 years has been discovered at a mine in Botswana, a Canadian mining company announced this week.
Weighing 1,111 carats, the stone is the second-largest “gem quality” diamond ever recovered, the Lucara company said in a statement.
The diamond was discovered in Lucara’s Karowe Mine and measures approximately 2.6 inches by 2.2 inches by 1.6 inches, or “about the size of a tennis ball,” according to the CBC.
“The significance of the recovery of a gem quality stone larger than 1,000 carats, the largest for more than a century … cannot be overstated,” Lucara president and CEO William Lamb said in the statement.
Abu Khaled looked at me across the outdoor hookah café table in the touristy Laleli district of Istanbul. Across the street cars nearly careened into each other every other second in a busy interaction, semi-subterranean shops, their windows half-buried by the pavement, advertised everything from cellphones to toothpaste to the latest designer women’s fashions—or, at any rate, cheap knockoffs for those who didn’t know the difference or much care. Amid the din of an international city at rush hour was the scheduled call of the muezzin, leading the call to prayer, and an unremitting stream of awful European pop music being pumped through the café’s loudspeakers, which we’d asked in vain to have turned down.
Even though ISIS terror had struck inside Turkey the week before, the organization calling itself the Islamic State, al-Dawla al-Islamiya, felt very far away. Truly, Abu Khaled told me, the people who run it want their subjects to live as if in a world of their own, captive minds in a closed society. But the real world is a small place, and this defector from the ISIS intelligence services said he was not the only one who had grown restive.
France has identified all 129 people killed in Friday’s deadly attacks in Paris, officials said on Wednesday, though they didn’t release any names.
People from at least 15 countries were killed in the attacks. At least 100 families traveled to France to identify the bodies.
Details have slowly begun to emerge about the identities of those who lost their lives, among them a 23-year-old design student from America. Many of the those killed or injured were young people hailing from around the globe, with victims from countries including Spain, Sweden, Portugal, Belgium, Mexico and Chile.
The “unthinkable” has happened: Former women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has been defeated.
In what’s been called “the biggest upset” in Ultimate Fighting Championship history, Rousey was knocked out by 34-year-old Holly Holm in the second round of their title bout in Melbourne on Sunday.
Holm, a former world champion boxer from New Mexico, delivered a powerful kick to Rousey’s head 59 seconds into the second round. The blow sent Rousey toppling to the canvas.
According to the Agence France-Presse, the 28-year-old California native, who had been undefeated through 12 UFC fights prior to Sunday’s bout, appeared to be “close to unconsciousness as she hit the deck.”
Rousey, a former judo Olympian, was reportedly whisked to the hospital following her knockout loss to receive treatment.
MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani said that Rousey had a “busted lip,” but “no serious injuries.”
In the world, human beings are facing various problems. People who are full of greed, anger, and ignorance are seen to be fighting with each other in words and deeds. As the fighting continues, various problems such as civil wars, wars of aggression, and wars of aggression are occurring. As world peace is being destroyed, humans are facing unbearable problems. Innocent children and women are not getting the rights they deserve and deserve. I can't think of one thing every time. What is it? The United Nations. If we look at the responsibilities and duties of the United Nations, I think it is not suitable for solving the problems that are happening in the world today. In fact, the United Nations and the World Security Council, such an organization must rule the world, must be able to give orders, and must have various ways to obey orders. There must be no organization that can influence more than that organization. There should be experts from each country. They can even dominate the superpowers like the US, China, and Britain. Only then will global peace be achieved quickly. Now, if a country with power develops more militarily, economically, or socially than its own country, then powerful countries will jealously seek out enemies and wage war. Or they will attack with fighter jets. In this, innocent people are losing their lives. No one understands the value of a life. You should think about how to achieve global peace by controlling these. If the US continues to be the permanent president of the UN, world peace will never be achieved. If you think carefully, no one sees that they are working for the common good, but for their own benefit, for the benefit of their own country. The permanent president of the UN and the Security Council has rejected this, As a young Rohingya, I have come to realize that only by electing the president and secretary from among the countries in the world through a secret ballot system and governing the world fairly can we achieve global peace. The United Nations and the Security Council are organizations in which any country must govern, give orders, and make them obey their orders. For example, only when a defendant is tried in court can we hold the leaders of the countries in check and control them, can we achieve global peace smoothly. Otherwise, it will not be easy for powerful countries to use various excuses to end this war every year, every year, for the benefit of themselves and their countries. No country's leaders pay any attention to the words of the United Nations and the Security Council. If we look at it in practice, look at the Rohingya issue. Myanmar is a small country. Even that country has been under siege for 8 years. What action can be taken? Why is the UN and the Security Council Powerless? Without such Power, how can the organization bring about global peace? Everyone should think about it. Whether there is a veto or a strong one, all countries in the world can only achieve global peace if they are subject to the UN and the Security Council. Seek peace in the quiet embrace of nature. Peace is an indispensable need of the human race. It is not as if one person can kill another person, and it is as if one country can attack another country, but instead of trying to build peace, we must try to destroy the peace now, and the world is getting hotter and is on the verge of collapse. I especially appeal to all the world experts to urgently try to bring about peace in all parts of the world. Mr, Noor Muhamed Arkhan Rohingya Youth Myanmar
