Announcements for the 2016 Grammy Awards nominees kicked off Monday morning in anticipation for the star-studded event in February. A list of the most highly coveted awards from the night was revealed on CBS This Morning, including album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best new artist.
A song or album must have been released from Oct. 1, 2014, to Sept. 30 for consideration in the 58th Grammy Awards, which airs Feb. 15. This means some of the year’s best-selling albums, including Adele’s recent 25 — which continues to break records — didn’t make the cut, while Taylor Swift’s popular 1989 and Alabama Shakes’ Sound & Color could be up for this year’s awards.

The U.S. Supreme Court Monday handed a legal victory to advocates of banning firearms commonly known as assault weapons.
By leaving a suburban Chicago gun control law intact, the court gave a boost to efforts aimed at imposing such bans elsewhere, at a time of renewed interest in gun regulation after recent mass shootings.
Police say the attackers in San Bernardino used such weapons as did the gunman who attacked a Planned Parenthood clinic two weeks ago in Colorado.
The court declined to take up a challenge to a 2013 law passed in Highland Park, Illinois that bans the sale, purchase, or possession of semi-automatic weapons that can hold more than ten rounds in a single ammunition clip or magazine. It specifically includes certain rifles, including those resembling the AR-15 and AK-47 assault-style firearms.

You’ll spend an average of 23,214 hours doing laundry over the course of your lifetime, according to the video above. That’s a lot of time dedicated to sorting whites and colors and contemplating the elusive lost sock. You might as well perfect the chore.
But as the Sklar Brothers tell us in this episode of PBS Digital Studio’s You’re Doing It Wrong, perfection still eludes you. You might be guilty of using too much detergent, or you could be one of those people who rubs clothing stains aggressively, which — sad news — might only be making the stain worse.

It’s 10:30 p.m. You’re a black male driving along the back roads of Anywhere, USA. Your car breaks down just as your cell-phone battery dies, so you’ll have to get out and knock on someone’s door for help. You come upon a patch of houses, some proudly boasting American flags, the others flagless. Which of these houses shall you approach? While it may come as a shock to some, most blacks to whom I have posed this scenario opt for a flagless house. This has nothing to do with any lack of patriotism. Outside these circumstances, they proudly stand for, salute and wave the flag. In fact, that Ralph Lauren gear with the chic little American flags as emblems — you can’t keep ’em on the shelves in some black communities! History, however, and the political symbolism that the deeds and rhetoric…

President Barack Obama will use his Sunday night address on terrorism to urge the American people not to “give in to fear” after the California shootings, and may ask Congress to take action to further safeguard national security, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said.
Lynch also said that “dealing with guns is one way to handle the violence crime issues that we have in this country.”
The White House said Obama would provide an update on Wednesday’s shootings in San Bernardino that killed 14 and wounded 21, and discuss the broader threat of terrorism, including how it has evolved and how he plans to defeat it. Authorities say a married couple – a 28-year-old American-born man and a 29-year-old woman originally from Pakistan – was responsible, and that the woman had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group on Facebook as they went on their rampage.

Their jobs were to keep their friends and neighbors healthy. They died together on Wednesday, shot at an office holiday party, allegedly by a co-worker.
Twelve of the fourteen victims were San Bernardino County employees, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said at a press conference Thursday evening.
Many of those killed in the assault on the Inland Regional Center worked for the health department, making their living inspecting restaurants, pools, water treatment systems and other public facilities.

The Obama administration is boosting the amount of corn-based ethanol and other renewable fuels in the U.S. gasoline supply despite sustained opposition by an unusual alliance of oil companies, environmentalists and some GOP presidential candidates.
The Environmental Protection Agency on Monday issued a final rule designed to increase production of ethanol to be blended with gasoline through 2016, a decision that could reverberate in Iowa’s crucial presidential caucuses.
The agency said it will require more than 18 billion gallons of renewable fuels in 2016, most of it ethanol. The amount is less than was set in a 2007 renewable fuels law, but is more than was proposed by the EPA in May. The agency said that the demand for gasoline has risen since May, increasing the amount of renewable fuels that can be blended in.

It is known that black holes are voracious objects, and that a star that wanders too close can be shredded and consumed by the immense gravitational force of the black hole. Usually, however, astronomers only observe the devastation after the fact. Catching it in the act is far rarer, and has occurred less than a handful of times.
An international team of astronomers has made a new observation of a black hole getting its lunch on, and the event they describe in a paper published in the journal Science is spectacular. For the first time, they have observed not just the star’s demise, but the black hole then ejecting a flare of matter at very close to light speed.
“These events are extremely rare,” said lead author Sjoert van Velzen, a Hubble fellow at Johns Hopkins University. “It’s the first time we see everything from…

The Thanksgiving story you know probably goes a bit like this: English Pilgrims, seeking religious freedom, landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where they found a rich land full of animals and were greeted by a friendly Indian named Squanto, who taught them how to plant corn.
The true story is more complicated. Once you learn about the real Squanto — also known as Tisquantum — you’ll have a great yarn to tell your family over the Thanksgiving table.
I asked historian Charles Mann, the author of 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus, and Paula Peters, a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe and an expert on Wampanoag history, to tell me the real story.
