Commuters in Washington were recently interrupted from their normal evening commute when an armed man boarded a Metro bus to West Seattle and tried to rob passengers at gunpoint.
But it was what happened next that makes the situation all the more striking: Bus passengers fought back against the would-be robber.
Surveillance footage released by prosecutors Wednesday shows one commuter push the armed man away before several other passengers jump into the fray. Working together, the bus passengers wrestle the gun-wielding man to the floor.

The former lead singer of the rock band Lostprophets was sentenced Wednesday to 29 years in jail, with a British judge saying that Ian Watkins had “plumbed new depths of depravity” in committing a string of sexual offenses against very young children.
.
Watkins, 36, pleaded guilty last month to 13 charges, including trying to rape a baby, sexually touching a 1-year-old, encouraging a fan to abuse her child and making child pornography.
.
Judge John Royce called Watkins a manipulative and dangerous sexual predator who had abused his fame to help satisfy his “insatiable lust.”

A suicidal gunman opened fire at a Reno hospital campus Tuesday, killing one person, wounding two others and sending police on a door-to-door search within the facility amid the chaos.
The Nevada Department of Public Safety said the wounded victims were in surgery and one of them is a doctor. The gunman killed himself after the shooting.
Reno Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson didn’t say how many shots were fired or what type of weapon was used, and didn’t release the identities of the male shooter or the dead and injured. He said, however, that investigators were confident no one else was involved.

John Beale will be sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to lying to superiors at the EPA and defrauding the government of $900,000.
Ever lied to your boss to get a day off work? How about doing that for 12 years? Oh, and your alibi: you were working for the CIA in Pakistan. Naturally. John Beale was the Environmental Protection Agency’s highest-paid employee and an expert in radiation and climate change with a masters from Princeton. He was also, apparently, very lazy and very creative. (Via C-SPAN ) NBC reports Beale would disappear from work for months, one time for 18 months straight, telling his superiors he was working for the CIA. Once, he said he was needed in Pakistan immediately, because his replacement was being tortured by the Taliban. In a December 2010 email to EPA management he said, “Due to recent events that you have probably read about, I am in Pakistan. Got the call Thurs and left Fri. Hope to be back for Christmas ….Ho, ho, ho.” As you might have guessed by now, Beale was not in Pakistan.

A student was left in critical condition after a shooting at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colo. on Friday.
A 15-year-old girl was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, though previous reports suggested a second student was wounded by the gunman.
Authorities identified the shooting suspect Friday night as 18-year-old student Karl Pierson.
County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said at an afternoon press conference that the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities “found his body in the internal portion of the school in a classroom.” The shooter is believed to have acted alone.
The shooter “targeted a specific teacher that he was interested in confronting,” according to Robinson.

Newlyweds just three weeks removed from their wedding day lured a Pennsylvania man to his death with a Craigslist ad because they wanted to kill someone together, police said.
Elytte Barbour told officers before his arrest Friday night that he and his wife, Miranda, had planned to kill before but their plans never worked out until last month when Troy LaFerrara responded to an online posting that promised companionship in return for money.
Elytte Barbour, 22, and Miranda Barbour, 18, both face criminal homicide charges in LaFerrara’s death. His body was found Nov. 12 in an alley in Sunbury, a small city about 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The couple recently moved to nearby Selinsgrove from North Carolina.
According to Sunbury police, Elytte Barbour told investigators he hid in the backseat of the couple’s SUV as his wife picked up LaFerrara at a mall on Nov. 11. He told police that, on his wife’s signal, he wrapped a cord around LaFerrara’s neck, restraining him while Miranda Barbour stabbed him.

A soldier stationed overseas watched in horror as his pregnant wife was stabbed in her home while the two chatted on video.
Rachel Poole, 31, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after a man who was allegedly hiding in the home stabbed her multiple times in Texas on Wednesday. Poole was nine months pregnant at the time. Police say Corey Bernard Moss stabbed Poole from behind with a stainless steel knife, according to KFOX.
During the attack, her husband, Justin Pele Poole, an American soldier stationed thousands of miles away in Asia, saw the attack unfold as the two talked over FaceTime, according to ABC15.
Poole was still in critical condition when her baby, Isabella, was born. Doctors performed a successful cesarean section, her stepfather, Gary Jones, told ABCNews.com. The baby is listed in good condition.
Police Det. Mike Baranyay told CNN that the woman recognized her attacker and repeatedly screamed his name to her husband.
Poole managed to call authorities. A short time later, the suspect, 19-year-old Corey Bernard Moss, was located by Fort Bliss Military Police and turned over to El Paso police. Detectives said the suspect was inside Poole’s house before she came home.

A Utah man accused of poisoning his wife will fight murder charges by claiming he was not home where his spouse swallowed a deadly cocktail, according to court documents reported by the Salt Lake Tribune.
Prosecutors allege that Martin MacNeill, 57, killed his wife Michelle MacNeill, 50, in 2007, so he could maintain a relationship with his supposed mistress, Gypsy Wills, WCSC reported.
His trial for murder and obstruction of justice began today. One of the first witnesses called was Michelle MacNeill’s surgeon, who testified that he prescribed higher than normal levels of painkiller Percocet and anxiety medication Valium as part of the treatment for her 2007 facelift, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Surgeon Scott Thompson testified Thursday that he upped the dosage in April 2007 because Martin MacNeill told him his wife had a low threshold for pain.

A 3-year-old Iowa girl died from injuries allegedly sustained when her daycare provider threw her to the ground for not removing her coat, police claim.
According to court documents obtained by KTIV, Rochelle Sapp called Autumn Elgersma’s mother Oct. 29 and told her that her daughter had injured her head in a fall. Sapp, who runs a daycare out of her Orange City home, said that that the 3-year-old had fallen down some stairs.
Two days later, Elgersma died in Sioux Falls, S.D., children’s hospital while receiving treatment for a skull fracture and brain swelling, according to court documents reviewed by KDLT. Doctors said the injuries were inconsistent with a child falling on a staircase.
Police allege that Sapp, 33 admitted to throwing the girl to the ground when they re-interviewed the caretaker on Thursday about Autumn’s suspicious injuries, KDLT reported.
