An Oregon couple involved in online pornography has been arrested on charges of murder by abuse after an autopsy determined their 7-week-old baby boy died of starvation.
Douglas County sheriff’s deputies said Wednesday that 26-year-old Stephen Michael Williams Jr. and 21-year-old Amanda Marie Hancock were arrested Tuesday at their home in Glendale. They were to be arraigned Wednesday.
A probable-cause affidavit filed by deputies says the parents told investigators they did pornography, which involved the mother self-lactating while others paid to watch online. The two also said they fed the baby milk but never took him to a doctor, despite signs he was losing weight.

Some 300 migrants who tried to cross the frigid Mediterranean in open, rubber boats, were reported missing Wednesday by survivors as the U.N. refugee agency and other aid groups sharply criticized the new EU rescue operation as insufficient and costing lives.
The suspected deaths add to the 29 reported earlier in the week by the Italian coast guard, which said those victims had died of hypothermia during the voyage that began over the weekend in Libya, where most smuggling operations originate.
The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said survivors had reported that four boats had left together, without food or water, and that the boats began taking on water almost immediately. Some 107 people had been rescued by the Italian coast guard and a merchant ship. The agency’s spokeswoman in Italy, Carlotta Sami, said the victims had been “swallowed up by the waves,” the youngest a child of 12.

A bomb blast ripped through a Shiite mosque in southern Pakistan as worshippers gathered for Friday prayers, killing at least 56 people and wounding dozens more, in the deadliest act of anti-Shiite violence in two years.
The attack compounds Pakistan’s security challenge to contain a surge in militancy following last month’s killing of 150 people, mostly children, at a Peshawar school.
The militant Sunni group Jundullah claimed responsibility for Friday’s bombing in the city of Shikarpur in Sindh province, 500 kilometers (310 miles) north of the port city of Karachi.

The body of a woman missing for almost a year was found floating in an apartment building’s water tank in Mexico City.
Carmen Yarira Esparza Noriega, a 27-year-old psychology graduate and aspiring actress, was reported missing last February, according to Fox News Latino. Family and friends feared the woman had been kidnapped and forced into a sex trafficking ring, according to Mexican newspaper El Milenio.
“But it seems,” her friend, 30-year-old Javier Paz, told the Daily Mail, “that her body was back in her apartment block the whole time.”

A Florida teen who had been arrested for violating his juvenile probation will be honored as a hero for saving the life of the cop who was booking him in jail.
Surveillance footage captures the moment back in September when Fort Lauderdale police officer Franklin Foulks, 49, collapses from chest pain as he’s booking Jamal Rutledge, 17.
Foulks falls back while he’s doing paper work, struggles on the ground and grabs at his chest. Rutledge springs into action and begins kicking on the security door, alerting other officers. Detective DeAnna Greenlaw told the Sun Sentinel that Rutledge also yelled for help.

Ending a seven-hour hostage siege, French security forces stormed a printing factory outside Paris on Friday and killed the two brothers suspected in the massacre at Charlie Hebdo magazine.
Almost simultaneously, police raided a kosher supermarket in the capital itself and killed a gunman who took hostages there.
One hostage was freed at the printing factory, authorities said. At the market, four hostages were killed and 15 freed, according to Israeli government officials who spoke to their French counterparts. The four dead hostages were killed by the gunman before the police raid, Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins said. Four officers were injured, one seriously.

A Missouri mother and grandmother are both in jail on charges of child abuse after a toddler was found badly burned.
Katie Grimes, 25, was arrested last Saturday after hospital staff and police found a two-year-old toddler suffering from burns on twelve percent of her body, including her face and back. The child’s eyes were also swollen shut from contact with hot bleach.
Court documents obtained by The Huffington Post detail the alleged abuse, and how both she and the suspect’s mother, 51-year-old Karen Wynn, allegedly attempted to lie to authorities. The details may be disturbing to some.

Two New York City police officers, Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, were shot dead “execution style” in Brooklyn just before 3 p.m. Saturday, police said, by an alleged gang member who posted on social media that he wanted revenge for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
“Quite simply, they were assassinated,” NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said at a press conference held Saturday evening at the hospital where the grieving families gathered. “Both officers paid the ultimate sacrifice today while protecting the communities they serve.”
Liu and Ramos may have never seen the attacker open fire as they were sitting in their patrol car, Bratton said, on special duty because of heightened violence in the area.
