Nebraska became the first conservative state in more than 40 years to abolish the death penalty on Wednesday when lawmakers boldly voted 30-19 to override the governor’s veto.
There are 10 inmates on Nebraska’s death row — the 11th died this week — but the state has not executed anyone since 1997 and only recently ordered the drugs necessary to carry out a lethal injection. It’s the 19th state to abolish capital punishment.
Lawmakers across the political spectrum came together to pass a repeal bill three times. Gov. Pete Ricketts, a first-term Republican, then vetoed the legislation on Tuesday. Thirty senators were needed to override him.

Nine officials of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), including two of its current vice presidents, were among 14 people indicted on Wednesday for racketeering conspiracy and corruption, the Department of Justice announced in a statement.
In addition to FIFA officials, a number of officials of other soccer governing bodies were named in the 47-count indictment for “racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies, among other offenses, in connection with the defendants’ participation in a 24-year scheme to enrich themselves through the corruption of international soccer.”
The arrests come days ahead of Friday’s FIFA presidential elections, which will still go ahead. Current FIFA president, Sepp Blatter was not among those arrested and is expected to win his fifth term, The Independent reported.

Karma has come back to a Sikh man who broke religious protocol to help a little boy at an accident scene in Auckland last week.
Harman Singh made international headlines when he took off his turban to cradle the head of Daejon Pahia, 6, who had been hit by a car.
Mr Singh, from India, is in Auckland studying a business course. He said he was overwhelmed with all the praise and didn’t think twice about helping the little boy.

Irish voters have resoundingly backed amending the constitution to legalize gay marriage, leaders on both sides of the Irish referendum declared Saturday after the world’s first national vote on the issue.
As the official ballot counting continued, the only question appeared to be how large the “yes” margin of victory from Friday’s vote would be. Analysts said the “yes” support was likely to exceed 60 percent nationally when official results are announced later Saturday.
Gay couples hugged and kissed each other amid scenes of jubilation at counting centers and at the official results center in Dublin Castle, whose cobblestoned central square was opened so thousands of revelers could sit in the sunshine and watch the results live on big-screen televisions.

A grand jury in Baltimore has indicted six officers in the death of Freddie Gray, the city’s top prosecutor said Thursday.
In a hasty early-evening news conference, State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby reeled off the charges handed down by the grand jury against the officers: Caesar Goodson Jr., William Porter, Brian Rice, Edward Nero, Garrett Miller and Alicia White.
The grand jury’s charges differed slightly from those filed by Mosby on May 1, when she announced the results of her office’s independent investigation of Gray’s death. Some original charges, including false imprisonment and assault, were dropped in the cases of some of the officers, and new charges, including reckless endangerment, were added against all of them.
