The controversial U.S. drone strike program in the Middle East aims to pinpoint and kill terrorist leaders, but new documents indicate that a staggering number of these “targeted killings” affect far more people than just their targets.
According to a new report from The Intercept, nearly 90 percent of people killed in recent drone strikes in Afghanistan “were not the intended targets” of the attacks.
Documents detailing a special operations campaign in northeastern Afghanistan, Operation Haymaker, show that between January 2012 and February 2013, U.S. special operations airstrikes killed more than 200 people. Of those, only 35 were the intended targets. During one five-month period of the operation, according to the documents, nearly 90 percent of the people killed in airstrikes were not the intended targets. In Yemen and Somalia, where the U.S. has far more limited intelligence capabilities to confirm the people killed are the intended targets, the equivalent ratios may well be much worse.

Former NBA star Lamar Odom is hospitalized and in critical condition after he was found unresponsive Tuesday (Oct. 13) afternoon in a Las Vegas-area brothel.
Odom had been at the Love Ranch brothel since Saturday, and owner Dennis Hof told TMZ.com that he was taking eight to 10 herbal Viagras at a time during his stay. Hof says that “there was no sign of drugs at all” in Odom’s room but that he had requested a bottle of cognac. But new reports say that both cocaine and opiates have been found in Odom’s system, and his condition is being treated as an overdose.
He was discovered unconscious while vomiting and foaming at the mouth, Hof told the New York Daily News. The 35-year-old is in a coma and may have had a stroke while unconscious, likely incurring brain damage.

The first debate of the 2016 Democratic presidential primary will be defined by two moments: When the topic turned to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) chief vulnerability, Hillary Clinton jumped at the opportunity to draw a sharp contrast. When the roles were reversed, Sanders threw her a lifeline.
Those two exchanges — the first on gun control and the second on Clinton’s use of a private email account as secretary of state — exemplified not just the different political DNA of each candidate, it underscored the brewing intensity of a Democratic primary that few thought would be competitive.
Clinton’s overall performance will be remembered as the more forceful one, in part because the early questions played to her strengths. A back-and-forth on why Sanders didn’t consider himself a capitalist led to her defending robust regulations, with him touting Denmark.

Palestinian men armed with knives and a gun killed at least three people and wounded several others in a string of attacks in Jerusalem and near Tel Aviv on Tuesday, police said, on a “Day of Rage” declared by Palestinian groups.
With the worst unrest in years in Israel and the Palestinian territories showing no signs of abating, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a security cabinet meeting for 3 p.m. to discuss what police said would be new operational plans.
Officials said Israel’s public security minister was considering whether to seal off Palestinian neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, home of many of the assailants of the past two weeks, from the rest of the city.

Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian, imprisoned in Tehran for more than 14 months, has been convicted in an espionage trial that ended in August, Iranian state television reported.
News of a verdict in Tehran’s Revolutionary Court initially came early Sunday, but court spokesman Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei did not specify the judgment. In a state TV report late Sunday, Mohseni-Ejei said definitively that Rezaian, The Post’s correspondent in Tehran since 2012, was found guilty.
But many details remained unknown. Rezaian faced four charges — the most serious of which was espionage — and it was not immediately clear whether he was convicted of all charges. Rezaian and The Post have strongly denied the accusations, and his case has drawn wide-ranging denunciations including statements from the White House and media freedom groups.

The blasts hit a peace rally by leftists and Kurdish activists.
Two bomb explosions targeted a peace rally Saturday by leftist and Kurdish activists in the Turkish capital of Ankara, killing 86 people and wounding 186, the country’s health minister said.
The explosions occurred seconds apart outside Ankara’s main train station as hundreds were gathering for the rally, organized by Turkey’s public sector workers’ union and other civic society groups. The rally aimed to call for increased democracy and an end to the renewed violence between Kurdish rebels and Turkish security forces.
“I tried to help but everyone was in pieces,” Ismet, a 56-year-old Turkish animator who survived the attack with his wife and child, told The WorldPost at the scene, still covered in the blood of other people.

This is the second school shooting in the U.S. this month.
A shooter opened fire early Friday at Northern Arizona University’s Flagstaff campus, killing one person and injuring three others, the school and police said.
Police identified the shooter as 18-year old freshman Steven Jones. The school’s police chief, Greg Fowler, said that Jones shot four male students around 1:20 a.m. after an altercation in a parking lot near the Mountain View Hall, a building that houses most of the university’s 23 fraternities and sororities. The Delta Chi fraternity confirmed that some of its members were involved in the attack.
The deceased student, whom the university identified as Colin Brough, was also a freshman, Fowler said. The wounded — Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek and Nicholas Piring — are being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center, the university said.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) summed up the feelings of his soon-to-be-former colleagues in one line: “Well, that was a surprise.”
He then moved to adjourn the meeting that had been called to elect a new speaker, a vote that was presumed to be a lock for House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). Instead, McCarthy had used his time before the GOP conference to say he was withdrawing his name.
“He asked for the floor, and it was a two-minute speech,” said Rep. Robert Pittenger (R-N.C.). “He said the country is asking for a new face, new leadership, and he said I’m going to pull out. I’m not the right person for this job. I think we’re all in shock.”

The search for survivors from the sinking of the El Faro cargo ship will be called off at sunset Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed.
USCG Captain Mark Fedor told reporters Wednesday afternoon that it was highly unlikely anybody could have survived six days at sea after abandoning ship in midst of a Category 4 hurricane.
“The decision to end a search is painful, but it is based on the art and science of rescue [operations],” Fedor said, adding that a person could only survive for 4-5 days at sea even in favorable conditions.

A top U.S. commander said Tuesday that the bombing of a Doctors Without Borders hospital in northern Afghanistan was accidental — but the humanitarian group, also known as Médecins Sans Frontières, claims otherwise.
The hospital, the only one of its kind in the region, was “deliberately bombed,” according to a statement released Tuesday by Dr. Joanne Liu, MSF’s international president. “The attack was unacceptable.”
The explosion rocked the northeastern Afghan city of Kunduz in the middle of the night, killing 22. This was the 12th U.S. airstrike in the area in a five-day period. The hospital was hit several times, causing some patients to be burned alive.
