Two fishermen who rescued an 18-month-old Syrian migrant baby visited the child and his mother on Saturday, days after they found him floating on the Aegean Sea, according to a Turkish news agency.
Fishermen Recep Evran and Cenap Gumran met with little Muhammed Hasan and his mother, Lorin Halef, in the western province of Izmir, according to news agency DHA. The boy’s father is still in Syria.
Muhammed was rescued on Wednesday, when the fishermen spotted him floating in a life jacket, after the boat carrying him and around a dozen others to a nearby Greek island sank, according to DHA.

Niya Kenny, 18, was in her math class at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina, when campus safety officer Ben Fields walked in and confronted one of her classmates, a yet-to-be named black girl. What happened next was captured in a video that’s shocked the country.
The girl was reportedly using her cell phone in class and was asked to leave for an administrator’s office. She refused to leave the classroom, which was when Fields was called in. Fields first tried to grab the girl by her arm. When she resisted, he placed her in a chokehold, lifted her body — still seated in the desk — off the ground and slammed her to the floor.
That’s when Kenny said she tried to speak up in the girl’s defense, she told local news station WLTX.

A major earthquake struck the remote Afghan northeast on Monday, killing more than 200 people in Afghanistan and nearby northern Pakistan, injuring hundreds and sending shock waves as far as New Delhi, officials said.
The death toll could climb in coming days because communications were down in much of the rugged Hindu Kush mountain range where the quake was centered.
In one of the worst incidents, at least 12 girls were killed in a stampede to flee their school building in Taloqan, just west of Badakhshan province where the tremor’s epicenter was located.
“They fell under the feet of other students,” said Abdul Razaq Zinda, provincial head of the Afghan National Disaster Management Agency, who reported heavy damage in Takhar.

There are quite a few people in the United States who think being poor is a breeze.
An astonishing poll by the Pew Research Center found in January that a majority of the most well-off people in the country are convinced poor people have it easy. The reason? They believe the poor enjoy access to government benefits “without doing anything in return.”
There are all kinds of ways to poke holes in that idea. There’s an observable physical and mental toll that accompanies living paycheck to paycheck. Welfare in United States has a work requirement. And there’s little evidence that assisting the poor has a corrupting influence or makes them less inclined to find a job. In the meantime, the rich enjoy a host of unique government benefits — all without doing anything in return.

Residents of a stretch of Mexico’s Pacific Coast dotted with resorts and fishing villages boarded up homes and bought supplies ahead of Friday’s arrival of Hurricane Patricia, a monster Category 5 storm that forecasters say is the strongest ever recorded in the Western hemisphere.
With maximum sustained winds near 200 mph (325 kph), Patricia is the strongest storm ever recorded in the eastern Pacific or in the Atlantic, said Dave Roberts, a hurricane specialist at the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Patricia’s power was comparable to that of Typhoon Haiyan, which left more than 7,300 dead or missing in the Philippines two years ago, according to the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization.

On Jan. 18, 2013, as the sun went down, Jeff Lockhart Jr. got ready for work. He slipped a T-shirt over his burly frame and hung his white work badge over his broad chest. His wife, Di-Key, was in the bathroom fixing her hair in micro-braids and preparing for another evening alone with her three sons. Jeff had been putting in long hours lately, and so the couple planned a breakfast date at Shoney’s for when his shift ended around dawn. “You better have your hair done by then,” he teased her.
As he headed out the door, Jeff, who was 29, said goodbye to the boys. He told Jeffrey, the most rambunctious, not to give his mom a hard time; Kelton, the oldest, handed his father his iPod for the ride. Then Jeff climbed into his Chevy Suburban, cranked the bass on the stereo system he’d customized himself, and headed for the Amazon fulfillment center in nearby Chester, Virginia, just south of Richmond.
When the warehouse opened its doors in 2012, there were about 37,000 unemployed people living within a 30-minute drive; in nearby Richmond, more than a quarter of residents were living in poverty. The warehouse only provided positions for a fraction of the local jobless: It currently has around 3,000 full-time workers. But it also enlists hundreds, possibly thousands, of temporary workers to fill orders during the holiday shopping frenzy, known in Amazon parlance as “peak.” Since full-timers and temps perform the same duties, the only way to tell them apart is their badges. Full-time workers wear blue. Temps wear white.

Vice President Joe Biden said he will not run for president in 2016.
Biden announced his decision in a statement given from the White House Rose Garden on Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, I believe we’re out of time, the time necessary to mount a winning campaign for the nomination,” Biden said. “While I will not be a candidate, I will not be silent.”
He urged the Democratic candidates to run on President Barack Obama’s accomplishments.

Federal regulators announced Monday that recreational drone operators will be required to register their aircraft.
“There can be no accountability if the person breaking the rules can’t be identified,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said at a news conference.
A task force of more than two dozen people will be responsible for creating guidelines for the national registry by Nov. 20, with the goal of instilling the program before the end of the holiday season, when around 1 million drones are expected to be sold.

Hawaii Gov. David Ige has declared a state of emergency to deal with the state’s homelessness crisis just days after city and state officials cleared one of the nation’s largest homeless encampments.
The move will help the state speed up the process of building a homeless shelter for families, and the state is considering four possible sites, Ige said at a news conference Friday.
“We are making sure that we have options for those who are homeless to move into an emergency shelter, and the biggest deficit in the system is shelter space for families,” Ige said. “So the emergency proclamation would allow us to stand up shelters for families in an expeditious manner.”

Gunshots set the tempo for one of the most draining rhythms of American life.
Mass shootings, which have been about as consistent as the rise of the sun this year, are a constant source of tragedy and anxiety across the country. Again and again, the United States reacts to mass shootings with a ritualized bout of mourning as critics of the country’s gun policies slide into a well-worn cycle of horror, sadness and anger.
One established feature of this cycle is a chart that circulates across the Internet showing how exceptional the U.S. is in the developed world for the frequency of its gun deaths.
