Medical researchers and government health policymakers, a cautious lot, normally take pains to keep expectations modest when they’re discussing some new finding or treatment.
They warn about studies’ limitations. They point out what isn’t known. They emphasize that correlation doesn’t mean causation.
So it’s startling to hear prominent experts sound positively excited about a new shingles vaccine that an advisory committee to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved last month.
“This really is a sea change,” said Dr. Rafael Harpaz, a veteran shingles researcher at the C.D.C.
Dr. William Schaffner, preventive disease specialist at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, said, “This vaccine has spectacular initial protection rates in every age group. The immune system of a 70- or 80-year-old responds as if the person were only 25 or 30.”

A bipartisan group of senators Thursday unveiled legislation to improve background-checks for gun sales, a narrow measure that attempts to address the recent spate of mass shootings.
The bill represents an incremental update to existing law but has the best chance of any effort to pass through Congress in recent years, with the weight of support from senior Senate Republicans behind it and no public opposition from the gun lobby.
The bill, crafted by Sens. John Cornyn, R.-Texas, and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., would attempt to better enforce current law and strengthen the National Instant Criminal Background Check system to ensure all background check information is uploaded.

Twenty people have accused Kevin Spacey of “inappropriate behavior” during his tenure at a London theater.
The Old Vic theater on Thursday released findings from an investigation into Spacey’s time as artistic director, a position he held from 2004 to 2015. The review, which was conducted by an external law firm, comes amid a wave of sexual misconduct accusations against the actor.
The nearly two-week investigation turned up 20 alleged incidents relating to The Old Vic between 1995 and 2013. All but two occurred before 2009, according to the theater.
In all but one case, individuals alleging “inappropriate behavior” by Spacey did not come forward at the time or asked that no formal action be taken, according to a press release issued by The Old Vic. None of the individuals who made allegations against Spacey said they were minors at the time of the incidents, according to the theater, and most shared their testimonies with investigators “on the promise of anonymity.”

After months of internal squabbling and doubts, House Republicans passed their tax proposal on Thursday, a major step forward for a House GOP that has thus far been unable to deliver on any major piece of President Donald Trump’s agenda.
The House passed the bill 227-205, with 13 Republicans joining every Democrat in opposing the measure, which would lower individual tax brackets, dramatically cut the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent, and nearly double the standard deduction while eliminating a slew of smaller write-offs.
But even as Republicans celebrated the passage of their tax plan, the public perception of the bill is less than stellar. According to the most recent polling, most Americans believe they won’t see a tax cut from the GOP tax plan. In fact, only about 25 percent of Republicans believe they will pay less as a result of the measure, while 47 percent of Americans believe Trump will pay less.

The gunman blamed for the deadly rampage in northern California began his killing spree by fatally shooting his wife and stashing her body beneath the floorboards of their home, police revealed Wednesday.
Word of the grim discovery came a day after Kevin Janson Neal gunned down four other people and attacked an elementary school before he was killed by police.
“We were looking for his wife, couldn’t find her yesterday,” said Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said. “We located her dead body concealed under the floor of the residence.”
