Should You Take A Vitamin Every Day?
You might be surprised at the answer.
As a kid, popping a single chewy, sugary multivitamin alongside breakfast was easy. But as an adult, navigating the world of vitamin supplements is more complicated. The sheer number of options available at the store, combined with confusing labels and a lack of nutrition knowledge, can turn the simple task of bettering your health into a seemingly impossible feat.
That’s why we chatted with two experts to help clear up the vitamin confusion. Read on to learn what vitamins are, why they’re important and what role they play in a healthy diet.

If there’s one food that no one — not your doctor, your nutritionist, or even your mother — will tell you to eat less of, it’s leafy greens. Calorie for calorie, chard, collards, kale, and other leafy greens may just be the most nutritious food you can eat. They’re packed with vitamins — A, B, K, and others — but also rich in essential minerals like calcium, iron, potassium, and magnesium, as well as antioxidants, which protect cells against damage. Leafy greens contain phytochemicals, natural compounds that can help prevent hardening of the arteries and lower inflammation linked to heart disease. The greens’ synergistic combination of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals helps detox cells and expunge free radicals that damage DNA, both of which may inhibit cancer cells from forming and multiplying.

Supplements such as fish oils and the memory-boosting herb gingko biloba do not prevent cognitive decline, according to new research.
But simple mental exercises, such as brain-training games, might help.
A review of clinical studies has found no evidence that herbal supplements, vitamins and even vitamins prevent cognitive decline in healthy older adults.
However the review, conducted by St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada, did find evidence that enjoying a challenging crossword or sudoku may be of benefit.
