I Was Sexually Harassed By A Massage Client And I Was Shocked By How I Responded

There is little that offends me. I like dark, even inappropriate, humor. So I guess it makes sense that I stood there laughing after I was sexually harassed for 80 minutes during a massage I gave during my one-night-a-week job as a massage therapist.
I learned the hard way that one of the funny things about sexual harassment is that you might not know it’s happened even after it’s happened. You might stand there laughing and thinking, I can’t wait to tell my husband about this creep, as if you had seen a new Netflix show that you weren’t the star of.
You may not know that there is a lag time between the lizard brain — the oldest part of the brain which is responsible for primitive survival instincts such as fear — and real time, and it can be one of the reasons you don’t flee an abusive situation like you thought you would. Or even realize the extent of what happened until days later.
This 6’4” man, who was so big his arms didn’t fit on the massage table, knew what he was doing. And in hindsight, after my lizard skin molted, I could see it too, strategically mapped out.

Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Friday explained why he believes Donald Trump violated the presidential oath of office with the admission this week that he would accept dirt on his 2020 rivals from foreign powers.
Trump has been widely criticized after making the startling confession in an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos.
Panetta, who led the Pentagon under President Barack Obama from 2011 to 2013, noted on CNN’s “OutFront with Erin Burnett” that “the law says that … any candidate who receives a benefit from any foreign country is violating the laws of our country.”
“That’s clear. It’s a violation of law,” Panetta said, adding that “for the president of the United States to say he would be willing to take that information and not have to call the FBI, I think represents a violation of the oath of office that this president took.”

When Derek’s girlfriend Brynn got pregnant in 2005, they were both still college students.
They had been in a relationship for two years and were living together near their school in Ohio. They were starting to ask themselves whether marriage and children would be in their futures, and if so, would that future be together. They were “just starting to develop into the adults we would become,” as Derek put it.
And then Brynn got pregnant.
They had always been careful to use condoms during sex, but Derek — who, like all people mentioned in this piece, has had his name changed to protect his privacy — believes one must have broken. Brynn decided to have an abortion, despite knowing she wanted a family one day. She wasn’t sure how Derek would react, so she got an abortion without talking to him about it.
She told him six months later.
Derek said that even after all these years, he still feels ashamed that Brynn didn’t consider him a safe and accessible enough partner when she made her decision. He also knows how lucky they were to have lived in a state and in a year where Brynn could access abortion at all.

How does a New York City taxi driver who makes about $22,000 a year get a loan for almost $1 million? Our reporters investigating the taxi industry for “The Weekly” found that a group of under-regulated industry leaders created a financial bubble in the market for medallions, the permits that let drivers own their own cab. Bankers, brokers, fleet owners and even city officials artificially inflated the prices of medallions and reaped huge profits by steering immigrant drivers into reckless loans.
The Fallout
After The Times first published its investigation in May 2019, various government officials vowed to take action.
The city is investigating the brokers.
The state has begun an inquiry into the lenders.
The federal government is reviewing some of the regulators.

Mohammad Hossain is still driving his cab and struggling to pay the $700,000 left on his loan. With his medallion worth only about $150,000, he hopes that the city will help him and other drivers reach a deal with their banks.CreditAdam Beckman for The New York Times.

When Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., was indicted in August 2018 on 60 criminal counts alleging that he spent more than $250,000 in campaign donations on luxury trips, tequila shots, Costco shopping sprees and other personal items, his first reaction was to blame his wife.
“She handled my finances,” Hunter, 42, told Fox News last year. “She was also the campaign manager, so whatever she did, that’ll be looked at too.”
“But I didn’t do it,” he added. “I didn’t spend any money illegally.”
Now Margaret Hunter may be getting her revenge — and as a result she could help a Democrat replace her husband in Congress.

The couple gazes brightly at the camera, posing for a selfie like the thousands posted on Instagram every day. “Here we go… Wish us, ‘Buon viaggio!'” the accompanying caption reads.
Such hopes for “a good trip” would be unremarkable, were it not for two facts: First, that the woman in the picture is Amanda Knox; and second, that the image marked the start of the 31-year-old American’s return to Italy for the first time since she was twice convicted — and finally exonerated — of the murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher in a series of sensational and controversial court cases..Knox is not naïve — she knows her return to Italy will trigger an avalanche of headlines.

You could be swallowing a credit card’s weight in plastic every week

Globally, we are ingesting an average of 5 grams of plastic every week, the equivalent of a credit card, a new study suggests.
This plastic contamination comes from “microplastics” — particles smaller than five millimeters — which are making their way into our food, drinking water and even the air.Around the world, people ingest an average of around 2,000 microplastic particles a week, according to the study by the University of Newcastle, in Australia.
These tiny particles can originate from a variety of sources, including artificial clothes fibers, microbeads found in some toothpastes, or bigger pieces of plastic which gradually break into smaller pieces when they’re thrown away and exposed to the elements.
