A colleague of mine was considering ditching his Time Warner Cable subscription in favor of PlayStation’s new Vue TV service, which streams live TV over the Internet.
It has a user-friendly menu and the option to record programs, plus it allows him to watch shows easily through his PlayStation 4 — and a basic package, with more than 50 channels, costs $49.99.
But he was disappointed when he tried out Vue, which for now is only available in New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia. While he was watching one night, the video stuttered and paused, interrupting his viewing. While it only happened once, it was enough to turn him off to the service.

Apple could finally offer some real competition to cable and satellite companies.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday evening that the consumer tech giant is planning to launch a web-based TV service this fall, with a small package of roughly 25 channels.
A TV service from Apple, which has been rumored for years, could shake up the TV industry, forcing other pay TV providers to drop prices, improve customer service and offer smaller packages to compete.

One day, kids who stream music might talk about digital downloads the same way that we talk about eight-track tapes, cassettes, and perhaps soon enough even CDs. But they could still be collecting records.
If you haven’t heard, vinyl is hot. LP sales shot up 32 percent from 2012 to 2013, even as overall sales of albums dropped. It was the format’s seventh straight year of growth. Digital album sales, meanwhile, dropped in 2013, the first time that has happened since Billboard started stracking them in 2001. CD sales declined last year by 14.5 percent, according to Nielsen SoundScan, although they still make up the vast majority of album sales.
When it comes to recent growth, only one format comes to close to vinyl: streaming, which increased in volume by 24 percent in 2013, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

Google took the consumer electronics world in July by storm with the announcement of the Google Chromecast HDMI Streaming Media Player, a digital media dongle available at the unbelievably low price point of $35.
The arrival of the Chromecast was a big surprise for several reasons. I keep on top of all the tech rumor sites every day, and I hadn’t heard so much as a rumor that Google was working on a media dongle, much less one for $35. There’s also Google’s very checkered record when it comes to hardware releases, which included the “Nexus Q,” another media streaming device introduced in the summer of 2012 that was ultimately cancelled before release.
But the Chromecast was something different: A super-cheap streaming solution, controllable from a smartphone or tablet, and a product that was released the day it was announced. In addition, it offered “browser-casting” from the Google Chrome browser on a computer. That, and the low price point, led to the Chromecast’s instant popularity.

It may be a little late to the party, but Rhapsody today updated its app to meet the looks of Apple’s iOS 7. Aside from going the flat route on the overall design, the application has also been improved with a number of handy features throughout. Listeners will now see a swipe-to-reveal menu (much like on Android), as well as a revamped radio experience which includes brand new stations from different artists and the option to thumb tracks up or down. In addition, this version lets you favorite any song being played, making it easy to access them at any point from the My Music section. If you’re a Rhapsody subscriber, expect more things to come to the web and mobile apps in the near future — the music service says it has “a lot of great things cooking.”
