A genetic variant that increases the risk of testicular cancer may be favored by evolution because it helps protect those with fair skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays, according to a new study. The finding could account for white men being more susceptible than black men to this type of cancer. It may also explain why testicular cancer is so readily treatable.
Gareth Bond, a molecular biologist at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Oxford, U.K., and colleagues hit upon the unexpected tradeoff while studying inherited genes that influence cancer risk. They were especially interested in a gene known as p53, which is mutated in more than half of all cancers. The protein produced by this gene is a key defense for the cell—acting on a wide array of other genes to protect against many types of stress, including DNA damage and oxygen deprivation. It also protects against cancer, telling badly damaged cells to commit suicide. Mutations in p53, or in other genes with which it acts, prevent this order from being received, and damaged cells continue to reproduce, forming tumors.

A boy and a girl hanging out with a group of fellow students in a high school gym were shot and wounded Friday afternoon, and up to three other boys may have been involved in their shooting, police said.
One boy fled and was captured near his home, and one or two other boys were being sought, they said.
The shooting happened at the Delaware Valley Charter High School in north Philadelphia around 3 p.m., authorities said.
Surveillance video shows a group of about seven students hanging around when the shooting happened, police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said. It was unclear if the shooting was accidental or intentional but it “doesn’t look like an active shooter type of situation,” he said.

It was supposed to be like any other day.
Students escaping New Mexico’s chilly temperatures congregated in the Berrendo Middle School gym before class started. Then, 13-year-old students Evan James and Kayla Koren, standing on opposite sides of the gym, heard a loud pop.
When they looked up, they saw blood and a fellow student on the floor, the victim of a gunshot wound to the face. A 12-year-old classmate holding a 22-gauge sawed-off shotgun stood nearby.
“I just saw blood everywhere,” Essance Sosa, 12, said Tuesday. “Everyone started screaming and running.”

Making good on a promise from last year’s State of the Union to help create good-paying American jobs, President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced a new public-private manufacturing hub in North Carolina to develop next-generation power electronics.
Obama’s announcement was meant to give a manufacturing boost to the state that has taken hits in the recession. “We’re not going to turn things around overnight. A lot of jobs were lost in the textile industry and furniture-making,” he told 2,000 gathered at a North Carolina State University arena.
But he expressed optimism that the time is now for a change. “This can be a breakthrough year for America,” Obama said. “The pieces are all there to start bringing back more of the jobs that we’ve lost over the past decade.”

In the modern world — when technological advances and information overload have left many of us with a desire to get back to basics — the need for ancient wisdom may be more important than ever before.
Ancient health and healing secrets are making something of a resurgence, and for good reason. The ancient Greeks asked the big questions about what it means to live a good life, and some of their theories on ethics and happiness have been backed by modern science. Thousands of years ago, Indian sages developed a system for stilling the thoughts that’s now practiced across America. The early Maya civilizations, too, developed healing systems that have influenced holistic healthcare to this day.

Health authorities in western Mexico said Thursday they have detected a probable case of flesh lesions due to the drug Krokodil, often referred to as “the poor man’s heroin.”
The head of the council on addictions in the western state of Jalisco, Dr. Enrico Sotelo, said the patient is a 17-year-old woman who is a resident of Houston, Texas. She came to Mexico to visit the Pacific coast resort city of Puerto Vallarta, where she has relatives, in November. Soon after, she checked into a local health clinic for digestive problems, and it was there that doctors detected the flesh lesions.
Sotelo, who in accordance with privacy guidelines did not reveal the patient’s name, said she told authorities she used the drug in Houston. Her current condition is unknown because she did not return to the health clinic there for any further treatment.
“She acquired this problem with Krokodil in Houston, not here in Puerto Vallarta,” said Sotelo, who in any case has implemented an educational program to warn about the drug’s ill effects.

Lizzie Velasquez is one of three known people in the world who suffers from a rare syndrome, which prevents her from gaining weight and has caused blindness in her right eye. But the 24-year-old consistently redefines what it means to be beautiful.
Some experts believe the Texas native has some form of Neonatal Progeroid Syndrome, a condition that causes accelerated aging and fat loss from the face and body, even though Velasquez eats about 60 small meals a day, the Telegraph reported.
Less empathetic people have found more odious labels for Velasquez’s condition.
When Velasquez was in high school, she discovered a video of herself on YouTube that was titled “World’s Ugliest Woman.” It had garnered millions of views.

Name: Marie Dozier
Age: 30
Height: 5’7″
Before Weight: 271 poundsHow I Gained It: My abuse of sugar, as a substance to provide me that rush, began as a small child. I knew I had a problem because I could never understand why all of my friends were able to have entire pantries full of snacks and treats at all times. The pantry would not stay stocked in my house for longer than a day because instead of eating treats occasionally, I would eat until the entire stock was gone. This continued to be an on-and-off struggle for me throughout my adolescence and into early adulthood, but reached its peak when I entered into an extremely unhappy and dysfunctional marriage.

The Hubble Space Telescope has peered back to a chaotic time 13. 2 billion years ago when never-before-seen galaxies were tiny, bright blue and full of stars bursting to life all over the place.
Thanks to some complex physics tricks, NASA’s aging telescope is just starting to see the universe at its infancy in living color and detail.
Images released by NASA on Tuesday show galaxies that are 20 times fainter than those pictured before. They are from a new campaign to have the 23-year-old Hubble gaze much earlier and farther away than it was designed to see.
“I like to call it cosmic dawn,” Hubble astronomer Jennifer Lotz said at the American Astronomical Society convention in Washington. “It’s when the lights are coming on.”
‘Smoking Caterpillar’ Puffs Out Nicotine To Deter Spiders, New Research Shows (VIDEO)

Ripped from the pages of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland,” scientists have discovered a smoking caterpillar of sorts.
While this find may not push Alice’s hookah-smoking insect from its psychedelic pedestal, this caterpillar is pretty snazzy, as it can use nicotine to ward off hungry wolf spiders.
The researchers found a gene in hornworm caterpillars that allows them to puff nicotine out through their spiracles (tiny holes in their sides), from the tobacco they consume, as a warning to their would-be predators. Researchers called this tactic “defensive halitosis.”
