Attacks by the New York City police unions on Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) may have backfired.
New York City voters across racial lines disapprove of recent protests in which police officers turned their backs on de Blasio at the funeral of two police officers slain in the line of duty, a new Quinnipiac poll says .
Black, white and Hispanic voters disapprove of the decision by police officers to turn their backs 69 percent to 27 percent, the poll says.

You’ve heard that using screens before bedtime can mess with your sleep, but new research suggests the problem is even more serious.
Reading from an iPad before bed not only makes it harder to fall asleep, but also impacts how sleepy and alert you are the next day, according to new research from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday, said the findings could impact anyone who uses an eReader, laptop, smartphone, or certain TVs before bed.
The new research supports conclusions from older studies, which have also found that screen time before sleep can be detrimental.

This dog with a dark past is now looking toward a bright future.
Earlier this month, Second Chance Rescue in New York City received a plea for help from a shelter in Georgia regarding a pit-bull mix, who has since been named Landis. The canine was emaciated with several serious medical problems.
“The tendons in all 4 legs are ruptured due to his prior living conditions. He is very small and underweight,” Jacquelyn O’Sullivan of Second Chance Rescue told the Huffington Post in an e-mail. “His body condition tell us that he lived in a small space, hence his dwarf-like appearance, bent legs and curved spine.

Call it the comeback of the year.
Last year, equipment failure caused NASA to deem its $600-million Kepler space telescope irreparable. But since then, astronomers and engineers devised an ingenious way to repurpose Kepler, whose mission has been to scour the cosmos in search of Earthlike planets.
And now, the planet-hunting probe not only has been reborn, but also has discovered a massive exoplanet some 180 light-years away.

Most corporate offices don’t condone drinking on the job, but a case may be made for reconsideration. As it turns out, a little bit of alcohol really can support creative thinking.
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago found that a certain level of inebriation can help get the creative juices flowing. In the study, participants whose blood alcohol level (BAC) was slightly under .08 percent performed better in a creative task than did their sober counterparts. (The intoxicated group, however, underperformed when they were assigned memory tasks.) The researchers determined that a person’s “creative peak” is reached when the person hits a BAC of .075 percent.

The antidote to racism partly lies in empathy, or the willingness to “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes,” as the saying goes. But scientists from universities across Europe are taking the maxim one step further, providing people an opportunity to experience life in someone else’s skin by experimenting with virtual reality as a means of helping people shed racial stereotypes.
Researchers from London and Barcelona teamed up to discuss their recent experiments on virtual reality and race in an opinion piece for the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences, published Dec. 15. The researchers found that if people got the chance to physically experience their own body with different skin colors (or ages and sexes), their unconscious biases against other racial groups could be diminished.
This isn’t merely a question of changing mentality or perception. The experience of “living” in different skin triggers sensory signals in the brain that allow it to expand its understanding of what a body can look like. This can “cause people to change their attitudes about others,” wrote the study’s co-researcher, Professor Mel Slater, a part-time professor of virtual environments at the University College London and research professor at the University of Barcelona.

Not all foods are created equal when it comes to the impact on body weight. Some are higher in calories than others. Others are tougher to eat in small portions. Still others are both rich in calories and impossible to consume in small amounts—which spells double trouble for the waistline.
So when you load up on these foods day after day, it’s not surprising that your weight goes up. Portion control is the best solution but there are ways to enjoy these foods in more healthy ways.

An audit conducted by the state of Nevada shows the cost of death penalty cases is nearly twice as much as murder cases where a lesser penalty is sought.
The audit, which focused on 28 murder cases in two Nevada counties between 2000 and 2012, concluded that the death penalty costs about $532,000 more than non-death penalty cases. The report cited the additional time and resources needed when the death penalty is sought as reasons for the escalated cost.
“These cases are more costly because there are procedural safeguards in place to ensure the sentence is just and free from error,” the audit stated.

Late comedian Joan Rivers had a reputation for being charitable, and her will, recently obtained by Page Six, upholds her generous character.
Of the estimated $150 million fortune Rivers left behind, she designated a portion of the funds to go to several nonprofit and non-governmental organizations: Guide Dogs for the Blind, God’s Love We Deliver, the Jewish Guild for the Blind, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Jewish Home and Hospital Foundation.
Melissa Rivers, the “Fashion Police” star’s only child, was named an executor of the estate. Other beneficiaries include the entertainer’s grandson Cooper, niece Caroline Waxler and nephew Andrew Waxler, and five members of Rivers’ staff.
