There’s no denying therapy is a huge financial burden: Affordability was the top reason people avoid mental health services, according to a survey conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
Depending on where you live and what kind of insurance you have, the price can be upwards of $80 to $200 for one 45- to 60-minute session. (And depending on your city, that cost can be even higher. In New York, for example, it’s not uncommon to pay around $300 per session.)
This happens for a number of reasons. Insurance is a big one. Many companies don’t often support therapists’ diagnoses or don’t provide adequate mental health coverage under their plans. Therapists also often can’t afford to accept insurance, meaning most of their clients have to pay completely out-of-pocket.
But here’s the truth: Therapy doesn’t have to be expensive in order to work. There are multiple options to get the help and treatment you deserve.
.
There are ways to make therapy affordable.

Psychotherapist Stacey Freedenthal had helped many people overcome suicidal thoughts before she attempted to take her own life.
Freedenthal, in her 20s at the time and pursuing her master’s degree in social work, had been a volunteer at a suicide prevention hotline. When callers phoned her in crisis, she used her training and education to help.

But at the same time, the depression she had struggled with herself on-and-off for more than a decade was worsening. The advice she gave to others contemplating ending their lives didn’t seem applicable to her. One night in January 1996, six months after she finished her volunteer position at the hotline, she tried to kill herself.
“Nobody is immune from suicide,” including mental health professionals, said Freedenthal, who is now an associate professor at the University of Denver graduate school of social work and the creator of SpeakingofSuicide.com, a suicide prevention website.

Pete Alonso is slumping at the wrong time for the New York Mets.
And with little margin for error, their two most reliable relievers let a game get away Sunday night that might prove too much to overcome.
Jedd Gyorko came off the bench late and played a big role in rallying the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-2 victory that damaged the Mets’ dwindling playoff chances. They dropped four games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild card with 13 to go. Milwaukee is three games ahead of New York.
Finally finished with a very difficult stretch in their schedule that lasted more than five weeks, the resurgent Mets now visit also-rans Colorado and Cincinnati on their final road trip this week before hosting last-place Miami and NL East-leading Atlanta.
“We’ve got a lot of fight on this team. So I wouldn’t count us out yet,” pitcher Zack Wheeler said.

Martha’s Vineyard, a Massachusetts island, sits in the Atlantic just south of Cape Cod. A longtime New England summer colony, it encompasses harbor towns and lighthouses, sandy beaches and farmland. It’s accessible only by boat or air. Vineyard Haven, on the eastern end, is a ferry port and the island’s commercial center. Oak Bluffs has Carpenter Gothic cottages and an iconic carousel.

“Saturday Night Live” has added its first Asian cast member.
The late-night sketch comedy series announced Thursday that Bowen Yang, who joined the show as a staff writer last year, was among three new hires for Season 45.
The promotion of Yang, who is of Chinese heritage, makes him the series’ only Asian American full-time cast member. Former cast members Fred Armisen and Rob Schneider both are part Asian.
Chloe Fineman and Shane Gillis are also among the latest recruits.
Yang, who is gay, co-hosts the podcast, Las Culturistas, entertains on comedy club stages and is known for his lip-sync videos. Yang was also one of the writers of the 2019 Golden Globes and has appeared on such shows as “High Maintenance” and “Broad City.”

President Donald Trump played a key role in silencing porn star Stormy Daniels and model Karen McDougal, who both claimed to have had affairs with the president.
Media executive David Pecker met with Trump multiple times to discuss using the National Enquirer tabloid to buy the silence of women he allegedly slept with, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal. The publication said it spoke to three dozen people with direct knowledge of the payments.
The U.S. Attorneys Office in Manhattan now has evidence of Trump’s role in the hush payments, according to the WSJ. He previously denied having knowledge about the payments.
In October 2016, when discussing making a payment to Daniels, Trump told his then-attorney Michael Cohen to “get it done.”
