Thirteen people were killed and as many as 20 were wounded Thursday in a shooting at a small community college in Roseburg, Oregon, according to multiple reports.
Sheriff John Handlin said at a press conference Thursday afternoon that officers had “neutralized” the shooter, who was male, during an exchange of gunfire in a campus building at Umpqua Community College.
The shooter is now deceased, Handlin said. He declined to specify how many people were killed and wounded.
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) said during a separate news conference that the shooter was 20 years old.

A boy and a girl hanging out with a group of fellow students in a high school gym were shot and wounded Friday afternoon, and up to three other boys may have been involved in their shooting, police said.
One boy fled and was captured near his home, and one or two other boys were being sought, they said.
The shooting happened at the Delaware Valley Charter High School in north Philadelphia around 3 p.m., authorities said.
Surveillance video shows a group of about seven students hanging around when the shooting happened, police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said. It was unclear if the shooting was accidental or intentional but it “doesn’t look like an active shooter type of situation,” he said.

It was supposed to be like any other day.
Students escaping New Mexico’s chilly temperatures congregated in the Berrendo Middle School gym before class started. Then, 13-year-old students Evan James and Kayla Koren, standing on opposite sides of the gym, heard a loud pop.
When they looked up, they saw blood and a fellow student on the floor, the victim of a gunshot wound to the face. A 12-year-old classmate holding a 22-gauge sawed-off shotgun stood nearby.
“I just saw blood everywhere,” Essance Sosa, 12, said Tuesday. “Everyone started screaming and running.”

The 12-year-old student who opened fire on a Nevada middle school campus, wounding two classmates and killing a teacher before he turned the gun on himself, got the weapon from his home, authorities said Tuesday.
Washoe County School District police said they are still working to determine how the boy obtained the 9mm semi-automatic Ruger handgun used in the Monday morning spree at Sparks Middle School. The boy’s parents are cooperating with authorities and could face charges in the case, police said.
Authorities say they’re withholding the seventh-grader’s name out of respect for his family.
At a news conference Tuesday, law enforcement and school officials again lauded the actions of 45-year-old math teacher and former Marine Michael Landsberry, who tried to stop the rampage before he was killed.
“I cannot express enough appreciation for Mr. Landsberry,” Washoe County School District Superintendent Pedro Martinez said. “He truly is a hero.”

A man with an assault rifle and other weapons exchanged gunfire with officers Tuesday at an Atlanta-area elementary school before surrendering, a police chief said, with dramatic overhead television footage capturing the young students racing out of the building, being escorted by teachers and police to safety. No one was injured.Just a week into the new school year, more than 800 students in pre-kindergarten to fifth grade were evacuated from Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, a few miles east of Atlanta. They sat outside along a fence in a field for a time until school buses came to take them to their waiting parents and other relatives at a nearby Wal-Mart.
When the first bus arrived about three hours after the shooting, cheers erupted in the store parking lot from relieved relatives, several of them sobbing.

A soldier who was repeatedly shot during the Fort Hood shooting rampage says he played dead before realizing the gunman might notice he was sweating.
Staff Sgt. Alonzo Lunsford testified Tuesday during the opening day of the trial for Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who is accused of killing 13 people.
Alonzo told jurors he panicked when he saw Hasan was holding a weapon inside a building where soldiers were preparing to deploy in November 2009.
Alonzo says he tried to appear dead after being shot, then later decided to flee because, “dead men don’t sweat.”
He says soldiers were trying to push their way out of a double-door exit, but one door was locked shut, so it created a bottleneck.

As a 17-year-old who had been shot by his grandmother pleaded with a 911 dispatcher to send help, the 75-year-old woman shot him again, a prosecutor told jurors Tuesday in suburban Detroit.
Just as Jonathan Hoffman “thought he was safe … Sandra Layne walks up and shoots him again. This time in the stomach,” Paul Walton, Oakland County’s chief assistant prosecutor, said during his opening statement in Layne’s first-degree murder trial.
Defense attorney Jerome Sabbota countered that the diminutive Layne feared for her safety during the fatal May 18, 2012, confrontation in the West Bloomfield Township condo Hoffman shared with his grandparents.

Layne is charged with fatally shooting her 17-year-old grandson. Layne has been jailed since May on first-degree murder and gun charges in the slaying of Jonathan Hoffman, who was shot multiple times May 18 in Oakland County’s West Bloomfield Township, northwest of Detroit. Hoffman was living with his grandmother while on 12 months’ probation.

A quick-thinking music teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School found a secure spot for her students as soon as she heard the first salvo from the shooter’s gun.
Killer Adam Lanza arrived moments later at their locked closet door, pounding and yelling “Let me in,” while the students in Maryrose Kristopik’s class quietly hid inside, AFP reported.
“We were all really scared and then we prayed,” said 9-year-old Nicholas Sabillon, who was interviewed with his parents. “Miss Kristopik gave us all lollipops. We thought it would be our last snack.”
