The premiere of “Cosmos,” Neil deGrasse Tyson’s new TV series, has a lot of science geeks massively pumped. And that includes the folks at NASA, who welcomed the 13-part series by releasing a stunning new gallery of space photos on Flickr.
From a psychedelic vortex on Saturn to monster solar flares to the beautiful remnants of dying stars, prepare to get seriously psyched about space.

Good photographers go to great lengths to get the best pictures, but few have ventured farther than Cassini did on July 19, 2013. From 5:27 p.m. to 5:42 p.m. EDT on that date, the robotic spacecraft peered across almost 900 million miles of empty space to capture a series of awe-inspiring images of Earth.

The Cassini spacecraft has taken lots of spectacular photos of Saturn over the eight-plus years it’s been orbiting the ringed gas giant. But a new image released just in time for the holidays may be the most beautiful.
“Of all the many glorious images we have received from Saturn, none are more strikingly unusual than those taken from Saturn’s shadow,” the lead of the Cassini imaging team at the Space Science Institute, Carolyn Porco, said of the new image in a written statement released by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
The institute is based in Boulder, Colo.

The Hubble Space Telescope launched on April 24, 1990, ushering in a new era in space exploration.
From its low-earth orbit, the telescope can take pictures without interference from the planet’s atmosphere, snapping photographs in visible light, ultraviolet and near-infrared wavelengths.
