The Internet’s so-called “front page,” otherwise known as Reddit, has been getting some bad press of late due to the recent unmasking of its notorious troll, Violentacrez.

In the hubbub, the fact that the site is also a clearinghouse for small acts of random kindness has been overshadowed. In the midst of a dark news cycle, the story of a simple act– replacing a man’s worn tires–is a simple reminder of the power of unsolicited generosity.

Garbage is piling up, a stench hangs in the air and mud-caked mattresses and couches line the streets. Residents are sifting through the remains of their homes, searching for anything that can be salvaged.

“We have hundreds of people in shelters,” said James Molinaro, the borough’s president. “Many of them, when the shelters close, have nowhere to go because their homes are destroyed. These are not homeless people. They’re homeless now.”

Growing up, my mother always told me: “You’ll learn more from a journey of 10,000 miles than from reading 10,000 books.” For years I thought it was a saying she had invented, a justification for taking me out of school for weeks at a time to satisfy her love of travel. I later realized she was quoting an old Chinese proverb that summed up the importance of gaining firsthand experience when learning about new ideas, new people and new cultures.
