HLN reports new research by Brown University professors shows bacteria associated with gum disease is also linked to pancreatic cancer and flossing could prevent both. The findings were posted online July 10 in the journal Carcinogenesis and originally reported by LiveScience. Newser explains some of the theories of how that bacteria could lead to cancer: “The bacteria may cause body-wide inflammation, weaken the body’s immune system, or directly activate pancreatic tumor signaling pathways.”

The U.S. State Department’s ability to investigate wrongdoing by its staff is under question after a report that the agency tried to cover up several crimes committed has surfaced.
Some of the allegations are against then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s security detail who allegedly hired prostitutes, a U.S. ambassador accused of trolling public parks for paid sex and a security official in Beirut committing sexual assaults on foreign nationals.
An internal memo from the State Department’s inspector general listed eight examples of wrongdoing by agency staff or contractors.
The memo also seems to indicate that the government agency tried to use its authority to stop the investigation and instead, opting to have the official, whose name has not been released, meet with Undersecretary of State for Management Patrick Kennedy in Washington. The official was then allowed to return to his job overseas.

Even in the movie version of the financial crisis, the giant mortgage company accused by the U.S. government of rampant fraud and abuse wouldn’t be so obvious as to nickname its mortgage lending program “the Hustle.”
The real-life Countrywide Financial, however, was not known for its subtlety. In 2007, as the mortgage market was collapsing, Countrywide, now part of Bank of America, used the hustle — officially, a program it called the “High Speed Swim Lane” — to eviscerate lending standards in order to keep pumping out home loans, even though many were fraudulent, according to a lawsuit filed by the U.S. government last month.

The embryos are safe. So are the frozen eggs and sperm at the NYU Fertility Center. But saving them required dramatic effort on the part of hospital workers, as Hurricane Sandy took down power and the backup generator failed.
“There were heroes here,” Dr. Jamie Grifo, the fertility center’s program director said in an interview today, describing the scramble Monday night and Tuesday.
