For years, stories about the North Pond Hermit circulated around central Maine.
According to lore, the shadowy figure would sneak into cabins, camps and houses surrounding North Pond, and steal food, clothing, camping gear and other supplies. But he never took money and never caused damage, according to a 2005 story on the hermit in the Kennebec Journal newspaper.
Locals, the newspaper reported, said they found odd caches of goods in the woods. Some speculated the hermit slipped out on wet or dark nights, gliding across the 273-acre pond in a boat to burglarize camps, the newspaper reported.

The body’s own “training manual” for attacking HIV has been recorded by US scientists and it is hoped it can be used to design vaccines.
HIV mutates in order to survive the onslaught of a patient’s immune system.
However, some patients develop highly effective antibodies that can neutralise huge swathes of HIV mutants.
A North Carolina team analysed the arms race between body and virus, published in the journal Nature, and has shown how these antibodies are made.
When someone is infected with HIV, their body produces antibodies to attack it. But the virus mutates and evades the offensive, so the body produces new antibodies that the virus then evades and the war goes on.

We’ve seen a slew of robotic animals in the past year or so — robotic cockroaches, robotic tunafish, robotic dragonflies. And now, thanks to Virginia Tech, we’ve got two robotic jellyfish.
On May 29 of last year, Virginia tech engineers unveiled “Robojelly,” a robotic jellyfish “roughly the size of a man’s hand.” And last week, the same group of engineers revealed their second jelly named “Cyro,” who is 5 feet 7 inches tall and 170 pounds.
The U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the Office of Naval Research are funding the robotic jellyfish. According to a press release, the aim of the project “is to place self-powering, autonomous machines in waters for the purposes of surveillance and monitoring the environment, in addition to other uses such as studying aquatic life, mapping ocean floors, and monitoring ocean currents.”

The Ellis Island Immigration Museum, which sustained severe damage to its infrastructure from the surging waters of Superstorm Sandy, is not expected to re-open to the public this year, the National Park Service said.
The Oct. 29 storm bought water levels as high as 8 feet to Ellis Island, adjacent to the home of the Statue of Liberty, destroying boilers and electrical systems.
The museum “is under repair from storm damage and will not likely be open in 2013,” the park service said Friday, as it announced that security screening for visitors to the Statue of Liberty would be moving to temporary facilities on Ellis Island.

Biologists briefly brought the extinct Pyrenean ibex back to life in 2003 by creating a clone from a frozen tissue sample harvested before the goat’s entire population vanished in 2000. The clone survived just seven minutes after birth, but it gave scientists hope that “de-extinction,” once a pipedream, could become a reality.
Ten years later, a group of researchers and conservationists gathered in Washington, D.C., today (March 15) for a forum called TEDxDeExtinction, hosted by the National Geographic Society, to talk about how to revive extinct animals, from the Tasmanian tiger and the saber-toothed tiger to the woolly mammoth and the North American passenger pigeon.

Now here is a deadly catch. According to Orange News, British angler Steve Townson achieved his dream of catching a giant wild arapaima fish in Guyana, South America.
The wild arapaima is the largest freshwater fish in the world. Townson’s massive catch weighed over 250 lbs and was plucked from the Essequibo River.
Townson achieved his fishy feat by using a 2-lb piranha as bait. The angler has traveled the world, especially South America, hooking exotic and unusual fish for a living. He has even started a company to help others do the same, calling it Amazon Angler.
After posing for photos, Townson allowed the fish to be released back into the water.

The CDC has issued updates on the SARS-like coronavirus that started in September; the fungal meningitis outbreak resulting from steroid injections; and the waning flu season.
Human transmission of the novel coronavirus may be possible, according to an update from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the SARS-like coronavirus outbreak that started last September and has claimed 8 of the 14 people confirmed to have had it.
“Three of the confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection were identified in the United Kingdom as part of a cluster within one family,” according to the CDC.
