The transportation sector is moving away from oil slowly but surely. Driven by growth in the use of biofuels and natural gas, non-petroleum energy now makes up the highest percentage of total fuel consumption for transport since 1954, according to a new report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
In total, 8.5% of fuel used by the transportation sector came from non-petroleum sources in 2014. Biomass from corn-based ethanol—still supported by generous government subsidies—represented the largest non-petroleum energy source and was used primarily to fuel cars and other light vehicles. Use of natural gas to operate pipelines followed close behind. The report also shows smaller but still significant increases in the use of electricity, biodiesel and natural gas in vehicles.
Climate change and fluctuating oil prices has made moving away from petroleum when possible a priority for governments and corporations alike. But it’s still uncertain which fuel will be the best and greenest replacement, according to Christopher R. Knittel, an MIT professor of energy economics . Ethanol, natural gas, hydrogen and electricity are all possibilities.

We head to Boston, Mass. to hack a Buick Regal with CarKnow founder Josh Siegel. CarKnow is a tech startup that uses custom hardware and software to digitally duplicate your car in the cloud.
.
Supporting MIT’s CloudThink standard, CarKnow uses data generated by the vehicle to create various applications that allow for remote control of the car via a mobile device. Does all this vehicle data present a security threat for car owners?

Officials at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have faced harassment and personal threats since the death of well-known Internet activist Aaron Swartz, the university’s president said Tuesday.
In a letter to the MIT community, President Rafael Reif said he would publicly release documents about MIT’s role in the case after the university completes its own investigation into the matter.

Connecting a human brain to a computer is as much a materials science problem as a biology one. What kind of interface is delicate enough not to damage nerve tissue, but resilient enough to last decades?
Researchers have come up with what they call a “stealthy neural interface” made from a single carbon fiber and coated with chemicals to make it resistant to proteins in the brain.

Last time we checked in with the 3D printing upstarts over at Formlabs, their Kickstarter was doing splendidly, having over doubled its initial funding target. Well, less than a month later, and with the money still rolling in, the current total stands (at time of writing) at a somewhat impressive $2,182,031 — over 20 times its initial goal. When we heard that the team behind it, along with some all important working printers, rolled into town, how could we resist taking the opportunity to catch up? The venue? London’s 3D print show.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Personal 3-D printers are getting more powerful and more advanced every year. The latest models, on display last weekend at New York’s annual Maker Faire, can crank out everything from model Eiffel Towers to wearable high-heeled shoes.
Swarms of hobbyists, parents and kids descended upon the event’s 3-D printing village to test out the latest innovations, including the Form 1 — a printer aimed at professionals that creates high-resolution objects using a method called stereolithography.

Engineers have created a robot that mimics a worm’s movements – crawling along surfaces by contracting segments of its body. The technique allows the machine to be made of soft materials so it can squeeze through tight spaces and mould its shape to rough terrain.
