The oceans are warming faster than climate reports have suggested, according to a new synthesis of temperature observations published this week. The most recent report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change made what turned out to be a very conservative estimate of rise in ocean temperature, and scientists are advising us to adjust our expectations.
“The numbers are coming in 40 to 50 percent [warmer] than the last IPCC report,” said Kevin Trenberth, a climate scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and an author on the report, published in Science Magazine on Thursday.
Furthermore, Trenberth said, “2018 will be the warmest year on record in the oceans” as 2017 was and 2016 before that.

Like many high school dramas, it all began when a close friendship soured.
They were a band of three: Two girls and a boy, all students at the same Maryland high school. If they weren’t hanging out in real life, they were texting each other silly photos and videos, trying to one-up each other with jokes. One day, at the beginning of the 2016 school year, one of the girls, a 16-year-old identified only as SK in court documents, sent her friends AT, also a 16-year-old girl, and KS, a 17-year-old male, a short video of her giving oral sex to a boy. It was just the latest, shocking entry into their ongoing “one-up competition,” according to court documents.
But soon after, the trio had an ugly falling out. KS started calling SK a slut, according to court testimony, and boasted that he could get her in serious trouble if he reported the video to authorities. The clip began to make the rounds at school, even though SK had only sent it to her two friends. The rumor was that KS shared it, though he denied it. Then, in December, her two friends brought the video to the school resource officer, who worked for the local sheriff’s office. It was ultimate tattle tale, but with terrible, real world consequences. Once it was in the hands of the police, the video became a criminal matter.
SK was charged under Maryland’s child pornography statute for sending a video of herself ― a minor ― engaging in a sexual act. A juvenile court agreed that she had distributed child pornography and displayed obscene material to minors. SK appealed, but last week, Maryland’s top court affirmed the ruling, saying that their hands were essentially tied.

EL TRICOLOR
Mexico’s National Team is known as el El Tri, short for El Tricolor. The name comes from the tri-color scheme of the squad’s traditional uniforms, which consisted of a green jersey, white shorts and red socks.
The colors mimic the country’s flag, which is green, white and red with an eagle devouring a serpent. The eagle can also be found on the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol’s official crest.

Name any fast-food restaurant, personal care product or home good you have bought recently, and chances are it contributed to the deforestation of the Amazon. Now name a big bank ― any big bank, really. More than likely it has helped finance that destruction.
Furniture companies like IKEA and La-Z-Boy, and footwear giants like Nike, Adidas and New Balance, are customers of Chinese manufacturers that source leather from Brazilian cattle ranches. Palm oil, produced in Brazil and elsewhere, is used in everything from pizza dough and ice cream to lipstick and shampoo. Soy, paper and wood products that come directly from the Amazon are omnipresent.
It’s not hard to pinpoint our unquenchable thirst for cattle, soy, timber, palm oil and other commodities as the main driver of Amazonian deforestation and the underlying cause of the record number of fires this year.

Phillip Lee has defected from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats, crossing the floor in the House of Commons as Boris Johnson addressed members of parliament.
The defection of the MP for Bracknell means the government no longer has a working majority.
Lee is the fourth MP to defect to Jo Swinson’s party in the last few months and takes their total to 15.
Speaking in the Commons, Johnson told Lee he wished him “all the best” after watching him sit down with the Lib Dems.

Emergency responders staged search-and-rescue operations on the island of Grand Bahama, but larger-scale efforts remained hampered Tuesday as nearly stalled Hurricane Dorian continued to pummel the northern Bahamas for a third punishing day.
Prime Minister Hubert Minnis, the director of the National Emergency Management Agency and other senior officials took their first flight over the Abaco islands in the northern Bahamas to assess the damage.
Authorities said Tuesday that children were among the dead.
“Unfortunately from what we are getting, a few of them were children,” National Security Minister Marvin Dames told The Washington Post. “We’re at the beginning of this and, as you know, this is a very unfortunate occurrence for us as a country.”
