It’s the same thing every summer: you turn on your porch lights and within minutes, you’re dealing with a swarm of bugs zooming around the lights – and bouncing off of your head or crash landing into your drink. What is it about light that brings out the bugs? Science tells us that this odd phenomenon is caused by phototaxis.
How Phototaxis Affects Insects
A phototactic animal or insect is one that instinctively moves to or away from light. The bugs that are swarming around your porch lights are positively phototactic, which means that they’re attracted to it. Bugs like cockroaches are negatively phototactic, which is why they scuttle away when you turn on a light.
What scientists aren’t quite sure of, though, is why insects are phototactic. Many believe that positively phototactic insects (like moths) use moonlight as a navigational tool. As they fly by moonlight, the Moon stays in a fixed position overhead. But when you turn on an artificial light, the moths see it as another Moon and become confused. As they try to guide themselves by your porch lights, they end up zooming back and forth in an effort to keep the “Moon” in sight.

Thousands of exhausted, elated migrants reached their dream destinations of Germany and Austria on Saturday, completing epic journeys by boat, bus, train and foot to escape war and poverty.
Before dawn, they clambered off a fleet of Hungarian buses at the Austrian border to find a warm welcome from charity workers offering beds and hot tea. Within a few more hours of rapid-fire aid, many found themselves whisked by train to the Austrian capital, Vienna, and the southern German city of Munich.
The surprise overnight effort eased immediate pressure on Hungary, which has struggled to manage the flow of thousands of migrants arriving daily from non-EU member Serbia. But officials warned that the human tide south of Hungary still was rising, and more westward-bound travelers arrived in Budapest within hours of the mass evacuation of the capital’s central rail station.

An 11-year-old St. Louis-area boy fatally shot a 16-year-old who entered his home during an alleged home invasion Thursday, police said.
The shooting happened on Hallwood Drive in northern St. Louis County at around 2:20 p.m. local time (3:20 p.m. ET), police said.
Two people had approached the home twice before Thursday, and on the third attempt entered the house through the front door, police said. The 11-year-old who lives in the home shot the 16-year-old intruder in the head, St. Louis County police said in a statement.

Philips made a splash at last year’s IFA conference when it showed off a television set with embedded, handheld projectors that could take an image onscreen and extend it to the wall behind the set. The visual trick is intended to create a more immersive viewing experience as the picture pours off the screen. Now the technology, which Philips calls Ambilight, is making its way to a new 65-inch UHD 4K TV due out later this year.
The Dutch lighting and technology giant debuted the TV at the IFA conference in Germany today, though it did not specify a price tag. It will be available in the fourth quarter of this year in Russia, Germany, and other European countries. Powering the TV will be Google’s Android TV software, meaning those eager to plunk down what we assume will be be an unsettling amount of cash for the device will have access to Netflix, Hulu, and all the other TV-centric offerings of the Google Play Store.

The Kentucky county clerk who rose to prominence for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples is now headed to jail.
A federal judge on Thursday ordered Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis to be jailed for contempt of court. She has waged a personal war against the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage.
Davis first defied an order by Kentucky Gov. Steven Beshear (D) for clerks to follow the law. After she was sued in federal court for her noncompliance and ordered to issue marriage licenses, Davis refused again. She sought a delay of that order and lost, so she brought her plea all the way to the Supreme Court, which this week effectively required her to comply.
She has since continued to defy the order, citing “God’s authority.”

Pope Francis will allow Roman Catholic priests to absolve women who have had abortions if they seek forgiveness during the upcoming Holy Year of Mercy, the Vatican announced Tuesday.
The pontiff said he will allow priests “discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it” during the special year, beginning December 8.
“I am well aware of the pressure that has led [women] to this decision,” he wrote in the announcement. “I know that it is an existential and moral ordeal.”

Traumatic photos showing a dead Syrian boy lying face down in the sand of a tourist beach in Turkey on Wednesday once again highlighted the immense humanitarian toll of the refugee and migrant crisis in Europe.
Note: This article contains disturbing images from the beach at Bodrum that will be upsetting to some readers.
Still young enough to wear velcro shoes, the child’s body was found on shore after two boats carrying Syrian refugees capsized. The boats were attempting to journey from the Turkish town of Bodrum to the island of Kos in Greece.
Survivors say at least 12 people died in the failed crossing, including four children and a woman. Seven other people were rescued.

Former President Jimmy Carter says he has melanoma that has spread to his liver and brain — but he’s fighting it with a drug so promising that its approval was fast-tracked last year.
Carter, 90, has already had his first infusion of the drug, known as Keytruda. It harnesses the immune system to fight melanoma that has spread through the body. Carter also told reporters he would undergo targeted radiation to his brain on Thursday afternoon.
“I’ll be prepared for anything that comes,” he said.

Thousands of California inmates who have spent years in solitary confinement will move back into the general prison population as part of a lawsuit settlement with the state.
The settlement, announced Tuesday, ends the class-action suit brought on behalf of thousands of inmates who had filled the Pelican Bay State Prison isolation wing for alleged gang affiliation. Confinement in windowless, soundproof cells remains a possible punishment for prisoners who commit crimes behind bars, but it’s no longer a tool for indefinitely segregating rival gang members.
More than 500 prisoners had spent more than a decade locked in solitary at the time the lawsuit was filed in 2012, according to the Center for Constitutional Rights, one of the groups suing the state. Seventy-eight had been in the Security Housing Unit, or SHU, for more than 20 years.
