As readers will be aware from the previous post about block boys, aka sparrow starvers, the lads who who were employed by local councils in Sydney and suburbs to clean the streets of horse manure. You can see a sparrow starver in the pic above, on the right on the kerb edge, white shirt and dark pants.
Until the advent of motor vehicles, the main form of transportation, whether of people or goods, was by horse. By 1880 the horse population had reached problem levels. The cities functioned on horse power, literally. London (then the largest city in the world) in 1900 had 11,000 cabs, all drawn by horses. There were also several thousand buses, each needing 12 horses per day. There were also various carts, drays, wagons and buggies for the transportation of goods and persons.

In a shocking about face, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has dropped out of President Trump’s business advisory council.
Kalanick said he was not participating because of the president’s immigration order in a memo to employees.
“Earlier today I spoke briefly with the president about the immigration executive order and its issues for our community,” Kalanick said in the memo obtained by CNN. “I also let him know that I would not be able to participate on his economic council. Joining the group was not meant to be an endorsement of the president or his agenda but unfortunately it has been misinterpreted to be exactly that.”
Kalanick was one of 19 business leaders on the council, which was scheduled to have its first meeting on Friday.
Last Friday, Trump issued a sweeping executive order, which imposed a temporary travel ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos sat four seats away from Donald Trump in December after accepting the president-elect’s invitation to a technology roundtable. Now, less than two months later, Bezos has publicly declared his support for a lawsuit filed against Trump and his administration. Life comes at you fast.
The lawsuit, filed Monday, says that Trump’s executive order banning the entry of visa holders from seven Muslim-majority countries to the United States will hurt both Washington state’s economy as well as its businesses. Microsoft and Expedia, also based in Washington, are supporting the lawsuit as well.
But these three aren’t the only tech companies now publicly opposing Trump’s immigration ban: Github, Google, Airbnb and Netflix are among a slew of other companies planning to meet on Tuesday to discuss filing an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit against the immigration executive order, CNBC reports. It’s unclear whether the amicus briefs will offer support for the aforementioned lawsuit or another suit filed on Monday by the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

In its international development efforts, the US sends more than a billion dollars’ worth of food assistance across the world. America’s food aid shipments sometimes spoil, resulting in food going to waste where it could be most needed. A group of researchers at MIT may have found a way to save over $10 million while feeding thousands of the world’s poorest people.
Shipping agricultural commodities like grains and legumes to the developing world raises considerable challenges for the nation’s food assistance programs. Procurement officials need to know when to ship, where, and when the food is expected to arrive. After all, food can—and all too often does—spoil.
The researchers from MIT’s Comprehensive Initiative on Technology Evaluation have found that much of the loss is potentially preventable. Now, they have embarked on a pilot project to improve the way America aids the world.

The ocean is to James Cameron as tacky gold fixtures are to Donald Trump: an obsession.
But luck wasn’t always on his side. After quitting his job as a truck driver to pursue filmmaking following a screening of Star Wars, Cameron fell under the wing of The Pope of Pop Cinema, Roger Corman. His first big film gig, as special effects director of the B-movie Piranha II: The Spawning, a film about killer piranhas, turned into his directorial debut when the original helmer, Miller Drake, was let go. But that film’s producer, Ovidio Assonitis, scrutinized his every decision before kicking Cameron out of the editing room, hijacking the film. As the story goes, while Assonitis was editing the film in Rome, Cameron came down with an awful bout of food poisoning, and during his delirium, had a nightmare about a cyborg assassin called a Terminator.
But it wasn’t until 1989’s The Abyss, about an underwater drilling team that encounters “non-terrestrial intelligence” deep underwater, that Cameron’s ocean infatuation was truly born. Since then, he’s stewarded 1997’s Titanic, which received a record 14 Oscar nominations—winning 11, including Best Picture and Best Director—and has filmed a number of deep-sea exploration documentaries, such as Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep, and once took a deep-diving submersible to the lowest point of the ocean, the Mariana Trench, where he discovered several new underwater species.

If you’re shopping for a new home, be it in the city, in the suburbs, or someplace that’s a little of both, there is one thing that you’ll need to consider over the rest: the area’s safety. Of course in some cities, like Philadelphia, each neighborhood is so distinct, it may as well be its own world.
And because the crime rates vary so much from one Philadelphia neighborhood to another, we’ve decided to take some of the research work out of it for you by creating this list. Here are the 10 safest neighborhoods in Philadelphia:
1. Chestnut Hill
2. Fairmount-Spring Garden
3. East Falls
4. Roxborough
5. Manayunk
6. Mount Airy
7. Bustleton
8. Somerton
9. Fishtown
10. Pennsport-Whitman-Queen

NOAA’s new weather satellite sent back its first images and the Earth has never looked sharper.
22,300 miles above the Earth sounds like a long way, but from that distance the GOES-16 satellite is able to capture high-resolution images that are allowing us to see our planet in clearer detail than we ever have before.
Launched in November 2016, the new satellite is the first of four new satellites that will transmit images at a higher-resolution than previously possible. The resulting pictures are pretty to look at but that’s not the point. These images could save lives.
“High resolution imagery from GOES-16 will provide sharper and more detailed views of hazardous weather systems and reveal features that previous instruments might have missed,” said Louis W. Uccellini, Ph.D., director, NOAA’s National Weather Service. “As a result, forecasters can issue more accurate, timely, and reliable watches and warnings, and provide better information to emergency managers and other decision makers.”

This composite color full-disk visible image is from 1:07 p.m. EDT on Jan. 15, 2017 and was created using several of the 16 spectral channels available on the GOES-16 Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instrument. NOAA

Under the new policy, which takes effect immediately, membership in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will be based on the gender indicated on an application.
Previously, the organization relied on an individual’s birth certificate to determine eligibility for its single-gender programs.
“However, that approach is no longer sufficient as communities and state laws are interpreting gender identity differently, and these laws vary widely from state to state,” BSA spokeswoman Effie Delimarkos said in a statement Monday.
The change brings the Boy Scouts in line with other youth organizations, including the Girl Scouts, that have created transgender-friendly membership policies in recent years.
