Last week I went to a cafe to work. When I asked the waitress for the wireless password, she couldn’t remember it. I watched as she went back to the counter and shuffled through some sticky notes until she landed on the right one. After a few minutes, she came back over and recited it to me. It then took me several tries to get the right combination of lower and uppercase letters in order to give me entry to the restaurant’s wireless network. It was an unnecessarily painful process, as it often is when connecting to Wi-Fi in a new place.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology want to change how we connect to Wi-Fi. To avoid the cumbersome network login process, a team has come up with a way to grant computers access to a Wi-Fi network based on their proximity to a router.
Applied practically, that means you could walk into a cafe and your device would automatically connect to a network — no annoying password necessary. The same could be true for a home network. When your friends come over, they could immediately be granted access to your Wi-Fi.

For all the alarm about the “rise of the robots,” or “software eating the world” or the peril of climate change, one of the most pressing economic dangers of the future is getting short shrift: Landlords are eating the world.
There is growing concern that wealth inequality has skyrocketed, and that capital income accounts for a growing share of the economic pie. This was the theme of Thomas Piketty’s “Capital in the Twenty-First Century.” But although we usually think of “capitalists” as they were defined by Karl Marx — i.e., owners of corporations — we forget that land also is a form of capital, which means landlords (and homeowners) are capitalists, too. Furthermore, according to Matt Rognlie, an economics Ph.D. student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, it is land, not corporate capital, that has been responsible for the lion’s share of the increase in capital’s share of income.

If a squat, cardboard-framed robot with a high-pitched voice started asking you questions, would you answer it? Would you share your troubles? Unload your concerns?
Many people would — at least, that’s what roboticist and artist Alex Reben has found. He unleashed the smiling bot Boxie in the halls of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to see what people would share with a robot. His work and other research suggest we’re not so averse to bearing our souls to the bots. In some cases, we’ll even tell them things we wouldn’t admit to each other.
In fact, Reben suggests robots and dogs aren’t so different.
“Dogs are basically a human invention. They’re a technology,” Reben told HuffPost Live. “We’ve bred them to be companions over millennia, just like we’re designing robots, we’ve designed dogs to be companions.”

Officials at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have faced harassment and personal threats since the death of well-known Internet activist Aaron Swartz, the university’s president said Tuesday.
In a letter to the MIT community, President Rafael Reif said he would publicly release documents about MIT’s role in the case after the university completes its own investigation into the matter.
