The toll from Northern California’s ranging wildfires continued to grow Tuesday evening as officials said the fires destroyed up to 2,000 structures and killed at least 17 people.
The devastating losses establish firestorms among the most destructive in California history. The estimated losses of homes, businesses and other buildings jumped from 1,500 to 2,000, and officials fear the death toll will also continue to rise.
Sonoma County alone has received about 200 reports of missing people since Sunday night, and sheriff’s officials have located 45 of those people, said county spokeswoman Maggie Fleming.
The majority of the fatalities are from Sonoma County, where huge swaths of the city of Santa Rosa were leveled by the Tubbs fire. Eleven people have died in Sonoma County as of 7 p.m. Tuesday, officials said. Two people have died in Napa County, three in Mendocino County and one in Yuba County, Cal Fire officials said.

The leading authority on post-polio syndrome, Dr. Jacquelin Perry was a 1959 Times Woman of the Year.
The country was in the grip of a polio epidemic in the 1950s when orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jacquelin Perry began performing spinal surgeries in Downey that helped paralyzed survivors of the disease regain mobility.
When some of the same patients returned to her 40 years later seeking help for pain and muscle weakness wrought by the aftereffects of polio, Perry remained true to form.

The 26-year-old Reuters editor allegedly behind the hacking of the Los Angeles Times website was not a hacker. He said so himself.
“I’m not a hacker,” Matthew Keys allegedly wrote in an online chatroom he shared with members of Anonymous. “I’m an ex-employee.”
Federal prosecutors charged last week that Keys used his access as a former employee of the Tribune Co. to help a hacker deface the website of the Los Angeles Times in 2010. The Tribune Co. owns the paper as well as the Sacramento TV station where Keys had worked until he was fired — two months before the hacking incident.
