Keith Wiens, a retired officer in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, faces second-degree murder charges in the August 2011 shooting death of his common-law wife, Lynn Kalmring. In court Thursday, Wiens testified that he shot Kalmring in the face in self-defense after a lost bet over a Nintendo Wii game escalated into a violent domestic dispute.
According to the Penticton Western News, Wiens told the court that he and Kalmring usually made sexual wagers over video games. On the night of the shooting, Wiens said he lost and came to the bedroom to find sex toys on his pillow. Tired, Wiens brushed the toys aside and went to bed, but Kalmring got upset and accused him of not finding her attractive, he said in court.
Wiens also said that he woke up to his wife hitting him, so he told her to pack her bags and leave. He said that he retrieved a handgun from his bedside table after Kalmring left the room because he was afraid of her.

A Pennsylvania man has filed a class-action lawsuit against Walmart alleging the retailer overtaxed him by 21 cents for items purchased with a coupon, Consumerist reports.
According to a lawsuit filed in Allegheny County, Pa., Brian Farneth purchased two cans of $2.97 shaving cream at a Walmart with a “buy one, get one free” coupon in June. The cashier, Farneth says, correctly deducted the price of one can of shaving cream from the total, but failed to deduct the associated tax, causing him to lose out on 21 cents.
Farneth alleges that he could be one of many customers at Walmart’s 8,500 stores across the world that the retailer may be overcharging for coupon purchases.
“Walmart’s current systems, with respect to the collection and remittance of sales tax, are in compliance with Pennsylvania’s tax laws,” Walmart Spokesperson Dan Fogleman wrote in an email to The Huffington Post. “We have previously sought an opinion from the state which confirmed this.”

After a quarter-century of searching, scientists have nailed down how one particularly rare subatomic particle decays into something else – a discovery that adds certainty to our thinking about how the universe began and keeps running.
The world’s top particle physics lab said Friday it had measured the decay time of a particle known as a Bs (B sub s) meson into two other fundamental particles called muons, which are much heavier than but similar to electrons. It was observed as part of the reams of data coming from CERN’s $10 billion Large Hadron Collider, the world’s largest atom smasher, on the Swiss-French border near Geneva.
The rare sighting at the European Center for Nuclear Research, known by its French acronym CERN, shows that the so-called standard model of particle physics is “coming through with flying colors,” though it describes only 5 percent of the universe, said Pierluigi Campana, who leads one of the two main teams at CERN involved in the research.

“None of us in the team have ever seen a lead coffin within a stone coffin before,” site director Mathew Morris of the University of Leicester Archaeological Services said in a written statement. “We will now need to work out how to open it safely, as we don’t want to damage the contents when we are opening the lid.”
The team announced their plans to pull the lid off the tomb — the only intact stone coffin uncovered at the site — earlier this month. At the time, Morris and his colleagues speculated that the coffin might contain the remains of a knight, such as Sir William de Moton of Peckleton, or one of two high-status friars.
The researchers decided to excavate the site after finding the remains of King Richard III in an unmarked grave beneath a parking lot last September. However, it wasn’t until earlier this year that tests confirmed the identity of the skeleton as the English king who ruled from from 1483 to 1485.

Mexican paleontologists say they have uncovered 50 vertebrae believed to be a full dinosaur tail in the northern desert of Coahuila state.
The National Institute of Anthropology and History says the tail is about 15 feet (5 meters) long and resembles that of a hadrosaur or crested duckbill dinosaur.
An institute Monday says it’s not yet possible to confirm the species, but it would be the first full tail of that kind in Mexico.
Paleontologist Felisa Aguilar says they uncovered roughly half of the dinosaur, which was 36 feet (12 meters) long and lived about 72 million years ago.
The excavation took 20 days in the municipality of General Cepeda in the northern state that borders Texas.

The gunman who went on a shooting rampage at a South Florida apartment complex was described as a quiet man who took his mother to doctor appointments, yet also someone who was known for getting into fights and yelling at his mom.
The conflicting portrayals of Pedro Vargas, 42, emerged as police tried to piece together why he set ablaze the apartment he lived in with his mother and then killed six people before police fatally shot him.
As the eight-hour standoff unfolded, horrified residents hunkered down in their homes, at times so close to the action that they could feel the gunfire or hear negotiations between the gunman and police, authorities and witnesses said Saturday.
As the rampaged winded down, Vargas held two people hostage at gunpoint for up to three hours in their apartment until a SWAT team entered and killed him, police said. The hostages were not hurt.

As many as 10 men allegedly took turns sexually assaulting a 13-year-old runaway Texas girl in an apartment where some cheered and filmed the attacks with their cellphone cameras, according to court records released Thursday.
Authorities have charged two men in the alleged June 29 attacks, which began after the girl ran away from an Austin group home for children and got into a car with three unknown men, according to an arrest affidavit.
Juan Lozano Ortega, 25, and Edgar Gerardo Guzman Perez, 26, were charged Wednesday with aggravated sexual assault of a child. They were being held Thursday in the Travis County Jail on $30,000 bond each. Court and jail records did not indicate whether the men had attorneys.
Austin police did not immediately return a phone message Thursday about the investigation or other possible suspects.
“All of the other males took turns having sex with victim against her will, which lasted through the early morning hours,” the affidavit states.

Police uncovered what they call a “prison room” in Texas where at least four victims were being held against their will.
Officers responded to the Houston home at 8:30 a.m. after a tip that four men, ages 79, 54, 74 and about 65 were being held captive in the garage, KTRK reports. When they arrived, the front door was nailed shut. Inside they found a trash-ridden room with no beds. The four victims were inside.
One of the victims says he’s been there for about 10 years, according to CNN. Three of the men couldn’t walk and were transported to a nearby hospital.
Three women and a suspect live in the house, and one person was taken into custody. It wasn’t immediately clear whether that person would face charges.
Details about the victims and their captivity were still hazy at press time. Police told some news sources that the men may have been homeless, and were lured to the house with beer and cigarettes in exchange for their Social Securty and Veteran’s Administration checks, FOX 4 reports.

Snocross and motocross racer Mike Schultz had been a longtime competitor in the Winter X Games before losing his left leg in a tragic snocross racing accident in 2008. However, the inspirational business owner used the tragic event to better his life and the lives of other action sports enthusiasts.
In this exclusive video, Schultz shares the gruesome details of that fateful day. “It was a pretty big hit,” he recalls of the moment he found out that his leg would need to be amputated above the knee.
When he returned from the hospital, he “got sick of sitting around” and started building a special knee and prosthetic leg to accommodate his passion for riding. Soon the Moto Knee was born.
“I use a little Fox mountain bike shock and it has compressed air in it so when I put my weight down into it, the spring pushes me back up,” Schultz says of the design.

“I think the statistics today talk about 609 million credit cards that are in existence, just here in the U.S.,” says Ron Klein, the inventor of the magnetic credit card strip. “When I hear those kinds of numbers, I almost have to be apologetic.” Even though his invention changed credit cards forever, he said he never made much money off the patent.
Like any good inventor, Klein identified a problem and created a solution. When Klein returned to the states after serving in the Korean War, he found that the way stores were handling so-called “charge purchases” was needlessly complicated. Klein used similar technology that was used in reel-to-reel tape recorders to create readable strips on credit cards.
Don’t feel too bad for Klein’s lack of monetary gain, though. He made more than enough money from his other inventions, including a “nutrition system” to raise chickens more efficiently.
