A tiny fraction of carbon helps account for the oddly light density of Earth’s iron core, a new computer simulation finds.
Though the core is only 0.1 percent to 0.8 percent carbon, the iron ball is the largest reservoir of carbon on the planet, the study authors said.
An impenetrable 1,790 miles (2,890 kilometers) below the planet’s surface, the core is a compelling mystery. The density of pure iron is heavier than the core’s observed density, which is calculated from seismic and laboratory studies.

Even in the movie version of the financial crisis, the giant mortgage company accused by the U.S. government of rampant fraud and abuse wouldn’t be so obvious as to nickname its mortgage lending program “the Hustle.”
The real-life Countrywide Financial, however, was not known for its subtlety. In 2007, as the mortgage market was collapsing, Countrywide, now part of Bank of America, used the hustle — officially, a program it called the “High Speed Swim Lane” — to eviscerate lending standards in order to keep pumping out home loans, even though many were fraudulent, according to a lawsuit filed by the U.S. government last month.

Memoto CEO and co-founder Martin Källström is building a postage-stamp-sized wearable camera that can document every moment of his life — or yours — by snapping two photos a minute, 1,920 pictures a day.
This “lifelogging” camera, which will automatically take a photo every 30 seconds and save it to a private site (a daily total of 1,920 assumes eight hours sleep), has received $509,000 in backing from more than 2,600 funders on Kickstarter. The project hit its initial $75,000 fundraising goal in a matter of hours. The Memoto camera is currently in development and slated to ship in February 2013.

Larry Hagman, who created one of American television’s most supreme villains in the conniving, amoral oilman J.R. Ewing of “Dallas,” died on Friday, according to a co-star. He was 81.
Hagman died at a Dallas hospital of complications from his battle with throat cancer, the Dallas Morning News reported, quoting a statement from his family. He had suffered from liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver in the 1990s after decades of drinking.

Occupy Wall Street alumni have hatched a new plan: Raise money and then bail people out of debt. The campaign, called Rolling Jubilee, kicks off Thursday night with a live-streaming telethon broadcast on the Jubilee’s web site.
While Occupy’s latest initiative may or may not succeed, Strike Debt, the group behind the Jubilee campaign, hopes to aid struggling debtors in another way: They have written a personal finance book. Unlike other educational money books, it’s not for people who have money, but for people who don’t.

STOCKHOLM — Guessing who will win a Nobel Prize is a bit like forecasting the stock market: Experts don’t seem to do it any better than laymen.
So if you hear professors and pundits predicting the “God particle” will be the theme of the physics prize next week, or that an American writer – finally – is due for the literature award, check their track record.
