After learning that a summer intern within its investment banking unit had been found dead at his London student housing complex last week, Bank of America offered the other interns in his program the opportunity to call it quits.
They all had just one week left on their contract, but, according to London’s Financial Times, no one went home.
Such devotion is part of a hard-charging, competitive culture that some blamed for the death of 21-year-old intern, Moritz Erhardt. Since he was found dead by flatmates in his London apartment, talk spiraled online suggesting long hours were at least partly to blame. On Friday, John McIvor, the London spokesman for Bank of America, told The Huffington Post the bank will convene a formal working group to look into Erhardt’s death, as well as to consider how to improve the work-life balance of the institution’s junior staffers.

A sexual education and health teacher at a Massachusetts high school has been indicted on rape charges after prosecutors said she had a sexual relationship with a student.
Rachelle Gendron, 27, was fired from her job at North Central Charter Essential School in Fitchburg following an investigation in which police allegedly recovered “significant” evidence of inappropriate conduct, including text messages and photos of the teacher “in various states of undress with genitals and breasts exposed,” from the phone of a 14-year-old male student.
In court Friday, Gendron appeared crying and visibly shaken as she was arraigned on charges including five counts of rape aggravated by age difference.

Researchers have reconstructed the structure of 4-billion-year-old proteins.
The primeval proteins, described today (Aug. 8) in the journal Structure, could reveal new insights about the origin of life, said study co-author José Manuel Sanchez Ruíz, a physical chemist at the University of Granada in Spain.
Exactly how life emerged on Earth more than 3 billion years ago is a mystery. Some scientists believe that lightning struck the primordial soup in ammonia-rich oceans, producing the complex molecules that formed the precursors to life. Others believe that chemical reactions at deep-sea hydrothermal vents gave rise to cell membranes and simple cellular pumps. And still others believe that space rocks brought the raw ingredients for life — or perhaps even life itself — to Earth.
But it’s difficult to recreate events that happened so far in the distant past.
.
The individual molecules within early Earth’s primordial soup that form the basis of life likely developed in response to natural selection.

A man with an assault rifle and other weapons exchanged gunfire with officers Tuesday at an Atlanta-area elementary school before surrendering, a police chief said, with dramatic overhead television footage capturing the young students racing out of the building, being escorted by teachers and police to safety. No one was injured.Just a week into the new school year, more than 800 students in pre-kindergarten to fifth grade were evacuated from Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, a few miles east of Atlanta. They sat outside along a fence in a field for a time until school buses came to take them to their waiting parents and other relatives at a nearby Wal-Mart.
When the first bus arrived about three hours after the shooting, cheers erupted in the store parking lot from relieved relatives, several of them sobbing.

Two teen girls stabbed 16-year-old Skylar Neese to death and left her body on the side of a road because they didn’t want to be friends with her anymore.
That’s what Neese’s father Dave told CNN in a shocking new interview, which focused on the night Neese was lured out of her Star City, W.Va. home and killed. Her body was found months later.
Rachel Shoaf, 16, pleaded guilty last month to killing Neese on July 6, 2012 and an unidentified minor was arrested, but has not been tried yet.
When asked what he had to say to the two young suspects, Dave Neese didn’t hesitate.
“Rot in hell,” he said. “I want them to go through the pain and agony my daughter went through. I want them to have no life because Skylar doesn’t have one.”
Dave Neese said his daughter and her killers were “inseparable” friends. He said he was “sick” when he found out that the same girl who had asked him for updates in the search for his missing daughter had stabbed her and left her body under branches in a Pennsylvania township.

During season 9 of “So You Think You Can Dance,” dancer Hampton Williams wowed judges and America with his “exorcist” style audition. His performance was moving, but Williams bowed out of the competition when other choreography proved too difficult.
Williams returned this season, bringing a new element to tryouts — his 4-year-old daughter. The adorable and talented little girl performed an astounding routine with Dad (and mom!). Spoiler alert: all three were sent straight to Vegas.

America’s biggest banks want you to believe that they get no special advantage, no subsidies, from being too big to fail. And yet people keep finding evidence of those subsidies.
The latest is World Bank economist Deniz Anginer, in a study for Bloomberg Markets magazine. Anginer estimates that the six biggest U.S. banks have saved $82 billion in borrowing costs since 2009 because investors believe the government will never let them fail and thus don’t charge as much to lend them money as they do smaller banks. The report will be published in the June issue of the magazine.
Together with dirt-cheap government borrowing programs, Bloomberg estimates these banks — JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley — have saved $102 billion since 2009 because of their size advantage.

A Denver-area woman died Tuesday night after an assault rifle she was handling accidentally fired and shot her in the head.
Witnesses told ABC Denver affiliate KMGH that Anastasia Adair, 22, was passing an AK-47-style assault rifle to her husband, Dana “Shane” Adair, when the gun went off. A second shot was fired when Anastasia fell and dropped the rifle, but no one was hit by it, two witnesses and the husband told police.
Shane Adair told police that the gun had a light trigger pull. Federal Heights Police Lt. Gary Toldness said that the fatal bullet’s trajectory appeared consistent with the witness accounts of an accidental shooting. The investigation is continuing.
