At age 4, Tan Le and her family left Vietnam as refugees, venturing out to sea without a clear plan. Her upbringing ultimately inspired her to think big, and now she is making a major difference in the world.
“Anything, even death, would be better than life in that environment,” the CEO of Emotiv Lifesciences describes of the once war-torn country. Upon immigrating to Australia, Le’s parents impressed upon her and her siblings to “work hard, study hard, get good marks at school and then do something worthwhile with our lives.”
Initially, Le began with the simple desire to be able to move something with her mind. That idea led to the creation of the Emotiv EPOC, a headset that “picks up electrical fluctuations that result from neurons firing inside your brain.” With a set of 14 sensors, the device can detect the user’s thoughts, feelings and expressions in real time.

SUMMARY: A healthy baby boy was born using a new method of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Doctors hope the new procedure will reduce the risk of a rare but potentially fatal complication of traditional IVF.
Doctors in the United Kingdom hope they have found a way to make in vitro fertilization safer for women. They’ve discovered a naturally-derived hormone called “kisspeptin” that stimulates a woman’s ovaries for egg production, but the new IVF treatment is gentler than traditional methods. The procedure has already produced a healthy baby boy for a very happy family.

In the film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” the characters undergo a scientific procedure to erase their memory. But what if instead of erasing memory, you could restore it? One neuroscientist aims to do just that.
Theodore Berger of the University of Southern California is developing a prosthesis to restore memory, by replacing a circuit in the brain’s hippocampus. Berger described the device at the Global Future 2045 International Congress, held here June 15-16. Already successful in rats and monkeys, the prosthesis is now being tested in humans.
Memory machine
The hippocampus, a brain structure tucked deep in the brain’s temporal lobe, converts short-term memories to long-term ones. Epilepsy or other neurological disorders can damage the hippocampus, preventing a person from retaining new memories.
.

A prosthetic device could restore memory to patients with brain damage due to epilepsy or other conditions. It’s being developed by USC’s Dr. Theodore Berger (above).

A Utah man driving a motorboat on Lake Powell was apparently distracted by his young passengers when he hit a houseboat and flipped the craft, leaving his wife dead and his daughter and his son’s girlfriend missing, deputies said.
Adrian Jackman, 59, of South Jordan, apparently tried to swerve when he noticed the moving houseboat but hit the front corner, authorities said.
The accident about 8 a.m. Thursday killed his wife, Marilyn Jackman, 57. His daughter, Jessica Jackman, 22, and his son’s girlfriend, Valerie Rae Bradshaw, 29, of Sandy, Utah, are missing in the water.
Crews brought a robot equipped with a camera to search for the missing women Friday in the 400-foot-deep water near Dangling Rope Marina. But they ran into technical problems and had to call off the effort, according to Denise Shultz, spokeswoman for the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area that encompasses Lake Powell.

The horrifying ordeal of Natascha Kampusch lasted for more than eight years, but the Austrian woman still managed to preserve her inner strength and take the opportunity to escape. Wolfgang Priklopil snatched Natascha off the street in 1998 when she was just 10 years old, keeping her in a locked cellar and abusing her for almost a decade. In 2006, Priklopil had Kampusch out in the garden cleaning and vacuuming his car. When his mobile phone rang and he turned away to take the call, she ran away as fast as she could, eventually getting a neighbor to call the police. Priklopil committed suicide by jumping in front of a train rather than be taken into custody.

Mexican authorities have arrested a former university professor who was on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in the resort city of Playa del Carmen.
Prosecutor Gaspar Armando Garcia Torres said Walter Lee Williams, 64, is wanted on charges of sexual exploitation of children and traveling abroad for the purpose of engaging in sexual acts with children.
Garcia said Williams was captured late Tuesday while drinking coffee near a park in the Caribbean beach town.
“This person is wanted by the FBI because he is linked to the sexual exploitation of children,” Garcia told reporters.
He said it wasn’t clear how long Williams had been living in Playa del Carmen and that the fugitive also had an address in nearby Cancun, where he was taken and turned over to Mexican immigration officials.

A Washington State mother is accused of trying to kill her baby because she thought the baby was trying to kill her.
Anna Murphy, 35, pleaded not guilty to assault charges Monday, according to The Bellingham Herald.
The baby’s father told authorities Murphy threw their daughter down and he found blood around the child’s mouth, according to KIRO-TV.
Investigators say Murphy told them she was thought the girl was trying to kill her, so she wanted to kill the child in self-defense. According to court documents obtained by The News Tribune, Murphy also said she was “having her first exorcism” and “she threw [the girl] on the ground because she thought she was traveling to another dimension and [Murphy] was trying to save her.”

Jared Fogle lost more than 200 pounds eating Subway sandwiches 15 years ago. Sharing his story paid off. Today, the spokesman has an estimated net worth of $15 million, according to New York’s Daily News.
Fogle weighed in at 425 pounds when he bit into his first Subway sandwich as a student at Indiana University.
He said that his weight and appearance fueled habits that contributed to his obesity and that he shied away from dates and parties that other college students enjoyed.
The business major envisioned himself working at an ad agency or public relations firm but never realized his personal weight-loss journey would double as his career. Since he started losing weight, Subway has been his only employer.

They come in brightly colored, shiny packages in fun flavors like chocolate, blueberry, gummy bear, wine and pink berry. But the American Cancer Society says the little cigars and packages of loose tobacco are aimed at kids and are just as deadly as cigarettes.
The American Cancer Society is pushing to make New York the first state to enact a comprehensive restriction on the sale of candy- and fruit-flavored cigarillos, chewing tobacco and tobacco used in water pipes. Its proposal would restrict the sale of all fruit- and candy-flavored tobacco products to tobacco shops, banning those products from convenience stories.
Maine bans the sale of larger “premium” flavored cigars and other states including Maryland have proposed laws, according to the University of Maryland Law School. New York City and Providence, R.I., also have restricted the sale of flavored tobacco.
