For the first time since Tamir Rice was shot and killed by the Cleveland police last year, the prosecutor in the case ran from the press.
After announcing the grand jury’s decision on Monday not to indict anyone in the 12-year-old’s death, Cuyahoga County prosecutor Timothy McGinty simply left and didn’t take any questions.
McGinty did acknowledge that the outcome “will not cheer anyone,” and offered a more-or-less correct view about what the law demands of police officers making split-second decisions when they fear for their lives.
“It would be irresponsible and unreasonable if the law required a police officer to wait and see if the gun was real,” McGinty said, in reference to the toy gun the 12-year-old held as officer Timothy Loehmann perceived a threat he felt left him no choice but to shoot.

A grand jury in Baltimore has indicted six officers in the death of Freddie Gray, the city’s top prosecutor said Thursday.
In a hasty early-evening news conference, State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby reeled off the charges handed down by the grand jury against the officers: Caesar Goodson Jr., William Porter, Brian Rice, Edward Nero, Garrett Miller and Alicia White.
The grand jury’s charges differed slightly from those filed by Mosby on May 1, when she announced the results of her office’s independent investigation of Gray’s death. Some original charges, including false imprisonment and assault, were dropped in the cases of some of the officers, and new charges, including reckless endangerment, were added against all of them.

A grand jury in Staten Island voted Wednesday not to indict New York City police officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner, a black man who died after being placed in a chokehold.
Garner, 43, died July 17 while he was being arrested for selling untaxed cigarettes. In a video of the arrest, which has since gone viral, Garner screams “I can’t breathe!” multiple times until his body goes limp. A medical examiner later said that he died of a chokehold, a move that is banned by the NYPD, and ruled his death a homicide.
Garner’s attorney said Wednesday that the “family is very upset and disappointed that these officers are not getting indicted for any criminal conduct.”

A grand jury has decided not to indict Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson for killing 18-year-old Michael Brown, St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch announced Monday.
McCulloch said members of the jury met for 25 days and heard over 70 hours of testimony from over 60 witnesses before reaching their decision. He confirmed Wilson had fired 12 shots at Brown, who was unarmed.
Brown’s Aug. 9 death sparked massive demonstrations in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson and a national conversation on race and law enforcement. Activists had predicted a new wave of demonstrations if Wilson was not indicted — not only in Ferguson, but in the greater St. Louis region and in other cities across the country.
